In the episode "A fistful of dollars" Bender tried anchovies and spat them out with everyone else, there he was capable of tasting them and disliking them. However in what I believe is the next episode "My three suns", he becomes a chef and Leela says he doesn't have a sense of taste. If he didn't have a sense of taste how would he dislike anchovies, or the converse: if he disliked the anchovies how could he not have a sense of taste. As a side note of non-contuinity in the first episode when Fry asked why he drank he replied with "I don't need to drink", however later on we learn he needs to drink to fuel his power cells. Theres less discrepancy in that however since his reply could have been just mere sarcasm.

Bender spit out the anchovies because everyone else was doing it. He just wanted to be popular.

As for in SP3K with the not needing to drink. At that point the writers had come up with the idea that alcohol fuels his power cells. It was the pilot not everything was worked out. By I, Roommate they had decided that Bender needed alcohol to kee his fuel cells charged.

A 2 episode gap between deciding to have the alcohol serve a purpose. Or you can stick with the wizards excuse.

Same here. I hate when the continutity of a show gets screwy.

I know, they can plan far enough to include nibbler in the freeze scene but they can't work out these details.

They had the Nibbler thing planned from the beginning unlike the other stuff. They decided later that they wanted to make a joke or something so they either forgot or ignored what they said earlier since it was just a side note or something.

Guess I can't blame them, it must be hard to get everything straight when you're starting a show off.

In "Mother's Day," Greeting Card mentions that "Liquor is the opiate of the human bourgeoisie" and that "In the glorious robot workers' paradise, there will be no liquor. Only efficient synthetic fuels." So it looks like robots don't NEED to drink at all.

As for the taste thing, that's always bothered me too. I think there's a thing with smell, too.

Robots have noses they just don't use them. Well at least Bender has one according to Bender Gets Made.

Waiter: "Would monsieur care to see the wine list?"
Bender: "No poison for us, thanks. I'll stick with good old mineral oil. Ah, functional."

In BBS Bender uses something that functions and slurps like a tongue. He may have the hardware (like standard robot mouth assembly RM-017-A or something) for tasting but not the software and/or tasting chip. It might be considered useless in a bending unit and make it more expensive.

Sometimes I wonder how Bender tastes beer.  Considering robots have no sense of taste.

The rate Bender drinks at, it'd be a miracle if he could taste it, even IF he had 'taste buds'.  :D

What's also weird is that in Bender gets Mad he eats food and says it tastes good if he has no sense of taste.

I was under the impression that only Bender Units needed to drink.   :hmpf:

And another thing...Bender says to Fry "I don't have anything else to do...let's get drunk!" in "Space Pilot 3000", yet it seems that the only time Bender displays human-like inebriation is when he doesn't drink ("Bender! You're blind stinking sober!" ). Curious...

Bender: "Wow! This is great!"
(don't remember right now): "You drank and smoked before, Bender!"
Bender: "Yeah, but now its bad for me!"
