The DVD commentaries give it away:
4ACV has a third supposedly harder to crack Alien Language. Looks like Leela's homeworld had the first clue:

(i filtered the pictures to get the writing clearer)

looks a bit like this from My Three Suns (Season 1):

i dont really think that those look very similar at all.  But if i had to guess the 3rd language is more like hieroglyphics, images standing for sounds that would usually need two or more english letters to create. (did that make any sense?)

ps- AL3 has been mentioned before the DVDs  tongue

The glyphs in the colour image definately have a square feel whereas the ones in the black&white are more irregular.

The language on Leela's braclet is not an alien language, but a mutant language.

Velour, where has AL3 been mentioned before the DVD commentaries, and more importantly, WHAT did they say about it?

ok.  This is hard for me because... i'm really david x cohen! (j/k :wink wink smile

Honestly, it is hard enough for me to remember all the useless facts that I do.  I have a really hard time remembering where I read them.

I would say either an article where they mentioned that there were other AL that wouldnt be seen till later in the series. And there was a lot of talk about ALs on the old Futurama Outlet boards.

I've been reading Futurama websites and stuff for about a year now so it's hard to remember each little bit of rumor or fact and where I heard it.  I would suggest that you go back though old articles, though, if you really wanted to know.

sorry I couldn't be more helpful guys. but i swear i'm not making this up

Well, they said that because AL1+2 got solved so quickly they are going to make an AL3 which will be much harder to de-code

I remember the references you are talking about.  That was from an intervies somewhere and the talk on the old Outlet board was during the time when AL2 was being worked on and folks were coming up with all kinds of AL theories, mostly based on the signs in My Three Suns and even Leela's blurnsball scorecard!

I was right there on the Outlet when AL2 was cracked.  Man, that was exciting!  I wish somebody kept those posts in a log somewhere.  I hope at least that the names of the two guys who cracked AL2 are remembered, cause I can't!

I'm not certain Leela's bracelet is AL3.  It may be a one-time thing like most of the signs in My Three Suns.  I do know that if it *is* AL3, it's going to be one tough nut to crack!

How sure are you that al3 even made it in?  The dvd commentaries were pretty vague about it, and it sounded like a lot of production season 4 was already planned or even started when they did the commentaries.  It sounded like they wanted to do al3 eventually, but got hiatused.

well since i can only recall things that I have read or heard, i guess I can't prove that it made it in.  But i never heard anything like "oh yea some of the ALs got scrapped." or "Other languages are planned for season 5"

so yea. like everything, take it or leave it I guess

I was just wondering if you had a different source of information, as it sounded like you did from a post above

The dvd commentaries said: We should do an al3, and make it more mathematically challenging.

I just thought it sounded like they didn't have al3 designed yet, but they wanted to make a new one.  I don't know when the commentaries were made, so I don't know when they were going to put them in, if they had enough time to stick several of sentences in production season 4 or not.

if we cant figure it our before the season ends, lets just hope they give us codec guides in the comic or something.

-edit- i did mean that, but what i realised afterwards is that it would be better to give us more clues in the comics (if we never get it)

It would be even more diffcult if they combined languages in a message. Is there a font for this (AL3 or AL2)?

The glyphs on Leela's Bracelet look something like the stuff Ancient Egyptians used to write.

Anyhoo, let's wait and see if anymore of this language rolls up in due course (FOX permitting that is).

Actally, getting clues in the comics might not be a good idea.  The comics are not using AL2 correctly.  I haven't checked the latest ones yet, but in the first one they used it in, they used it in the same way that AL1 is used, i.e. just letter substitution.

The smaller views of Leela's bracelet do look like hieroglyphics, but in the large view the similarity kinda goes away.

I have long suspected that that shot from M3S was another, 3rd language, but I'm not sure. If they had it for so long, why hasn't it shown up? Also, the # of characters is less. It is probably random. As for the bracelet... if I had to guess right now, I'd think that it is Leela's initials. It makes sence, its 3 characters, and it would hold sentimental value to her parents. Since it is "harder to crack" it stands to reason that it would be a direct translation as with AL1 (my personal favourite) and may be a similar math-related translation as was AL2 which I still don't think has been 100% cracked, since some characters are missing (unless I'm behind the times).

Therefore, I think AL3 will probably end up as:
a) containing more than 26 characters, using new characters to replace things like TH or GH or CH
OR b) Make the translation more complex by making you do something weird like start translating from the end and work your way to the beginning.

These are only guesses. I haven't got Leela's Homeworld in a digital copy yet, so I can't make my own pics. I might make some kinda disscussion thing on my site. We'll see.

Btw Chump, you've got some errors on your AL3 page.  The character you have listed as 26 should be 00 and you are missing a few characters.  Also, one of the characters you have shown for the word "yummy" is wrong. The third character should be 04 and you have 07.

Chump is missing characters 1, 5, 6, 8, 20 and 22. Number 5, 8 and 20 have been decoded, but 1, 6 and 22 are still unknown.

The character

can be decoded as 0 or 26, you will get the same result. In Futurama Comics #5 that character is A, so I guess 0 would be more "correct" than 26.

If those symbols on leela's bracelet are AL3, then those symbols above leela's bed from 'lesser of two evils' (i saw it on leela's site) could be AL3 too right, it both has to do with leela so.....

btw: if anything i'm saying about 'leela's homeworld' is wrong, don't be mad, i havent seen the episode, i have only seen screens and reviews so...

see ya later

Hmm, if we continue to crack these Alien Languages (and they actually make more Futurama) I wonder if they will give up and use diverse Earth lanuages - like if Amy started getting into writing one of the many Chinese dialects - and seeing if we'd get them.
Just a thought.  roll eyes

I'm trying to figure out what the sign above leela's bed says.
but if i zoom in on the sign , the image gets worse, does anyone know a possible way to make pictures more clear?

anyway, im still trying to find out, i'll run over that scene on my vcr, see if i can find it there.

i really think there's gonna be somethin' to do with the bracelet and the sign.
(maybe an ancient language from leela's people or somethin')

If we're on the topic of the unsolved:
I saw that sign above Leela's bed in Lesser of Two Evils. It appeared to be AL, but it could be something else, my copy is blurred. Also, in My 3 Suns, there is A LOT of AL in Little Neptune. The only ones I failed to get a shot of are the ones around the ATM machine. If anyone with the DVD can help? It probably has a better shot of it from there...

Also, I just fixed the keys section of my site, and added an AL3 section accessable thru "Other Stuff" and more art, and the AL section from Leela's Homeworld. (Also, I'm working on a new layout perhaps)

hehe... no that letter in WyΩming is greek and called omega.

It's the symbol of the electric resistance, which is called Ohm, named after the guy that found the formula to it.

I guess the problem with AL3 is that we don't have a keystone to it. Like there was with AL2 (the two things on the Niblonian Planet). So without any longer phrases it is pretty hard to get behind it - especially since it probably got harder than AL2 already was.  wink

The leela baslic or what ever it was doesn`t look any thing like this sign above, also it doesnt look like the same language as this either, could they be differnt languages ?

I see people've given up on al3 ever since 2005...unless there's a thread I haven't seen or something, well this last pic's obviously not al1 or 2 but they might just have stuffed random symbols in there...although that's not really likely of them, I think the easiest way to decode this language is through that pic since we have context ( it should have something to do with Leela ) and we have a relatively large amount of text ( at least it's more then the rest of data we have ) or this one http://www.futurama-madhouse.com.ar/alien/2acv09/sign3_h.jpg although the image is rather blurry so unless someone can get another clearer shot of it we might not be so lucky, also if anyone says that they didn't talk about al3 in the commentaries or that it wasn't confirmed that might be to not give us any hope and see how long it goes uncracked, plus they're making new episodes rather soon so I think we should be prepared for anything they might send us, imma see what i can make of this pic when I get more free time...well then, all i need to do now is find the relevant 6-letter ( hopefully english ) words that could fit in that upper right spot, hmm...mutant...maybe...damn.. .that's all i can come up with in 5 minutes....better check some sort of online dictionary ><

Yeah , I'll try that, I found a site with (probably) all the 6 letter words in english, if anyone wants to help finding a list of words that could fit in there go to http://www.esclub.gr/games/wordox/6.html actually that can't take less then a month for me to do on my own and that's for just one word...by the way does anyone know how they got to decipher al2 ? And for some reason I can't help but see the letters "abc" on Leela's bracelet, they just seem slightly deformed. EDIT : Umm..there's a problem with the al3 theory...at least for this pic http://www.futurama-madhouse.com.ar/alien/3acv02/sign3_h.jpg seems there only are 9 different characters and only one (the triangle) recurrs in the other pic, I also noticed that there were some recurring characters in http://www.futurama-madhouse.com.ar/alien/2acv09/sign3_h.jpg this might mean that it's like AL1, the "x" might be replacing a vowel or something...I'm starting to think there really is no sense to this though, well at least it got me occupied for a few hours

In one of the commentaries David Cohen mentions that AL2 (?) is a more sophisticated cypher. Says something like the 1st time a character is used it is one symbol, the 2nd time the same character is used another symbol is used and so on progressively. Makes it sound more like an Ultra Machine-type code.
