in the episode about poplers fishy joe claims that he owns a fast food franchise on every planet exept mc pluto

but pluto has recently been un-planeted?
well its not a planet anymore....

not to say that the makers of futurama could have forseen this but still humourous non the less.

i thought it was funny anyway.  smile

in the future they could have made it a planet again for studying it more closly

so it could still be a planet in the future

Pluto and McPluto are obviously not the same planets, since at no point is the planet on which Birdbot of Icecatraz takes place is at any point referred to as McPluto.

The 'planet' designation is still very much up in the air. There's some who reckon largish moons with atmospheres ought to be regarded as planets.

Personally I say a rose by any other classification system would be equally pointless.

It's a fair bet that in a thousand years of scientific in-fighting terinologies and classifications will change time and time again, but a world's a world.

The Pluto on the Birdman of Icecatraz episode was  snowny winter wonderland.  Too bad McPluto was never explained.  Maybe it was a resturant.

i think i would agree with Organazation14, they probably did want to study the planet more closely sometime in the future

In Futurama, there are numerous planets with similar names, for instance omicron persei 1-9, and dog doo 1-7, so it's not too hard to believe that there's a pluto and a mcpluto

Those are planets named after their star and numbered by distance from it. That's how planets are classified. Our solar system, for example, would consist of Sol 1-8/9. Our planets have proper names, however, because we give them precedence due to proximity.

'Mc' is also Gaelic ancestral name meaning 'son of'. So McPluto, presumably, could mean 'Son of Pluto'.

Charon, perhaps? Nix? Hydra?

Charon shouldn't be anyone's son technically.

I'm randomly going with Nix.

Charon is the son of Erebus and Nyx technically.

Well, they were brother and sister.  What did you expect?

That sort of thing happened a lot in classical mythology, though.

Oh, if you're going to go mythology, sure. I was sticking to astronomy - Charon is more like Pluto's twin sibling than offspring. And yet not planetary enough to be the sun's son (no pun intended).

If you incorporate mythology the heavenly bodies have an all-too-bizarre relationship.

Or maybe Ploto was a planet when the episode was made.

It was Matts. Pluto is now classified as a dwarf planet. So it still is a planet... I guess. I'm too lazy too look up the defintition of a dwarf planet right now.

    Planet.

    Dwarf Planet.

Or, if you're too lazy to follow the link,  wink a dwarf planet has these four attributes:
    • Is in orbit around the Sun.
    • Has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (near-spherical) shape.
    • Has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.
    • Is not a satellite
I'll just ooze back under the lab door now...

They can take away Pluto's Planetary designation when they pry it from my minus 230C, dead hands.

McPluto was renamed Pluto in 3006.  It was re-designated a planet in the 28th century.

Yes he is, and he's been visiting #fc from time to time, too.

My bet is that the IAS will cave and restore Pluto's planethood before too many more years go by.  I'll bet one pint of beer.  Any takers?

Pluto must become a planet again, so that the one we're chasing now will be christened Planet 10, fulfilling the destiny of Buckaroo Banzai.

I did.  And now that I have the blu-ray I've been meaning to re-watch it.

And just yesterday I read of an analysis suggesting that Pluto has a sub-surface ocean!  Surely that, along with its tenuous atmosphere and apparent geologic activity (not tectonic), will convince the IAS to admit it back into the family of planets.
