Another pre-reference was in the episode "Bart gets an Elephant," when the DJs Bill and Marty suggest that instead of giving Bart an Elephant they would surgically transform Skinner into "some sort of Lobster like creature"

Haha... coincidence?
I also like to think of the following quote as a sort of pre-reference to Futurama:
From episode The Front
Cartoon writer nerd- "To hell with cartoons. I'm gonna do what I always dreamed of. I'm gonna write that sitcom about the sassy robot."
Also, possibly this quote from episode The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show(which coincidentally, I think was written by David Cohen)
Focus group guy- "So, you want a realistic, down-to-earth show... that's completely off-the-wall and swarming with magic robots?"

It's probably just a silly coincidence though... heheh

That "Cartoon writer nerd" was actually Al Jean, current Executive Producer of the Simpsons. Would've been much funnier if it was a Groening look-a-like saying it.  :p

the alien in the picture resembles the space mutants from the 1989 NES simpsons game "bart Vs. the space mutants" perhaps the futurama space blob designs came from the mutants from the game.

Another old simpsons episode which references futurama from the past. Gee, Mat must have a time machine...

Anyway, in the episode where Bart and Lisa write episodes of Itchy and Scratchy and send them in with Grampa's name on it, there is a bit where one of The I&S writers (after Grampa slagged off I&S) that he's gonna write a sitcom about a 'sassy robot'. It's in Season 4 if you want to lookm it up, but can't remember what its called.

Everyone probaly knew that already didn't they?

whoops somebody already wrote this, I'll just go off quietly...

haha... did you seriously post that at first without reading my post referencing the sitcom about the sassy robot simpsons reference?
If so, I like the way you think, except for the double posting thing. You should always think first before double posting: "it's edit time".
...yeah.
  :)
Okay the above doesn't really make much sense. Just... um yeah...
sorry.

I was watching the "XMAS Story" and I noticed that one of animals in the pet store looked like one of the villians from "The Simpsons" arcade game. I didn't know if anyone else noticed it too.

But I guess it would be futurama episode old simpsons reference.

Actually, both are based on a character from Matt Groening's oft forgotten comic "Life in Hell"
