I know this is kind of late, but I would have to agree that the sound of the Holophoner in The Devil's Hands is one of the greatest ever.  It's just so incredibly relaxing and peaceful, moreso than anything I've heard from regular instruments.

If I could find any real mp3s of something that sounded just like the Holophoner, I'd jump all over them.  It's a shame the clips in the episode are so short.

I've heard that Holophoner sound before, but couldn't remember. Then I did. That same instrument is in Civilization 2: CTP. Don't know if that helps narrow it down.

Any CHance it could an Indian flute, sounds almost the same as someone i used to know who played it. The sound has a very north indian feel to it. Pictures of indian farm fields and a rising sun come to my mind everytime i hear it.

The sound of the holophonor is a mix of synth in the background and a bamboo flute as the main instrument.

This is definitely the case for the balcony solo. I was certain the rhythm section was synth strings, and after hearing that it's clear the lead is a bamboo flute. However, in most other parts the holophonor can be seen to have the potential to recreate parts of or the whole of an orchestra.

Parts of that almost sound like they came out of a Theremin.

I think the holophoner is like a cross between a flute and a saxophone.  I wonder if Fry ever played a musical intrument before he tried the holophoner.
