I do not (suprisingly) enjoy being insulted.

And in my last post I don't know what I was thinking.
Also how come TFH has been "Buddy Of The Week" for like before I registered?

Yeah, me either.

and...  http://www.peelified.com/cgi-bin/Futurama/13-000352-1/

Not exactly the same thing but I don't feel like diging further back and it's the same answer  :)

Yeah, that pretty much explains EVERYTHING on peel. And any other forum more than a year old. (before the first year, things are usually explained by the administrators' whimsy, laziness, or anal-retentive compulsiveness, which haven't had time to become "tradition" yet)

that said it's time to shut up now, before we're told to shut up. (Another time-honored tradition)

Re: buddy of the week question.

Posted copied from Actual Complaints thread:

Quote
By YLB:
Hmm, I thought that the Buddy of the Week was automatic, and set the buddy who gives the most PEEL referals each week. That's why each website links to PEEL with an individual buddy number. I remember when I joined, it was CGEF, then in July changed briefly to TFP, and then stayed at SFF.

So, if SFF has had the most referals for that long, it's possible to be Buddy of the Week for as long it has been.

By Teral (Me! I'm the hero!):
That's pretty much accurate YLB. The only additional info is the increase is percentage-based, meaning an increase from 10 to 20 is better than an increase from 700 to 1000. The main problem with the Buddy of the Week thingy is, well, there aren't so many buddies left. Click on the "Proud to be supported by:" link above the button collection below and you get a list of every PEEL buddy, with their total refeal number. Let's take a look shall we?

Futurama Scan Art Central   - Dead
Can't get enough Futurama   - Biggest supporter, so unlikely to beat the others in the percentage increase
The Futurama Point   - Alive
PEEL People   - Dead
Ain't no such thing as too much Amy Wong    - Inactive
Futurama Merchandise Page   - Inactive
Space Station Futurama   - Sporadically updated
Planet Express Denmark   - Dead
One and only Bender   - Dead
KFNF   - Alive ... but Norwegian     :p
The Fry Hole   - Sporadically updated
Futurama Outlet Germany   - Dead
Sean's Futurama Picture Palace   - Dead
Futurama Nerve Center   - Dead
Free Futurama Project   - Dead
Aliens Unlimited   - Inactive
eMerchandise   - No return link
PimpBunnies - Non-Futurama related

18 supporters, 8 non-existant, 3 are inactive, 2 are non-Futurama related. Leaving CGEF, TFP, SSF, TFH and KFNF as the only contenders. So seeing the same site for several consecutive eriods aren't unusual.

Oops. My mistake, sorry. I'd noticed it too, and just assumed it was like the "Raging bender" thing that just never got updated.

For those that still didn't get it. [-mArc-] isn't lazy. He's not a teenager anymore that beside school has nothing more to do than surfing the internet all day. He's got a job to do and a girlfriend to entertain (  ;)).

So I wouldn't call it lazyness, but lack of time and on top of that changing iferiour things like the "classic episode" and "buddy of the week" are unnecessary when it comes keeping PEEL alive (technical wise).   ;)

Good point, gff, and for the record, I only refered to laziness in the first year. In my experience, people don't start forums unless, at the time, they have too much free time on their hands. In my book [-mArc-] gets major credit for keeping things going at all, most forums end up imploding once the originator stops having time to waste on them. Just look at the desicated remains of the other Futurama fansites that are scattered over the distopian wasteland known as the internet.

OK: closed threads are not deleted so the offending poster can learn from their mistake. This is sensible, and I agree with it.

However, shouldn't completely gratuitous spam like pimp 10x's be an exception? He's clearly not trying to make legitimate posts, just spamming for the sake of spamming.
And why, oh, why does everyone have to respond to every single one!?!

[edit] Perhaps a "Nuke User" option that not only bans them but deletes every post they've made from every thread? Not certain how these forums are implemented, it could be trivial or a royal pain in the ass to implement such a feature.[/edit]

"I feel like I'm taking crazy-pills!!"

[edit]Reply to below: It's not the troll that has me irritated, but the people ranting about it. Though I admit the apparent difference is probably just semantic.[/edit]

Here is another reason why threads are closed and not deleted, posted by VelourFog on page 7 of this thread:

Plus most people are a little slow and make another thread saying, "What happened to my thread?!!! It's gone!"

Also it might be a little hard to integrate such a ban/delete all posts option into PEEL, like [-mArc-] told me on the last few pages it is even hard to reverse a single search result, because of the database layout PEEL is using (flat files as I remember) so you'd have to search every single file for such member and delete these entries. That not only is pretty time wasting but can also screw things up pretty bad I can imagine.

hmm. YEah, now that you mention it gff I remember reading something from marc about that. Is it not pulling data from an SQL database, but some alternate/custom db instead? that surprises me, but I've never worked with cgi scripts at all.

It's not the cgi scripting, but more the age. The release of UBB PEEL is running is from 2000 (see the copyright note on the bottom). I guess the kernel and general layout off this UBB version is even few years older (this is version 5.45b... I don't know when 5.0 was released). Also I don't know whether public sql database system were that far already, but I doubt that it was normall for hosting companies to offer "cheap" mysql databases.
Flat File System means that data is stored in simple text files with separator characters. And once such a separator is set wrong... well... it screws up everything.

gff, I spent years doing DB stuff for a living, so I know what flat file means, but it could still be a db server that uses flat files or a custom flat-file format implemented into the UBB scripts directly. I'm guessing the latter, but I've never looked into UBB's source or requirements before.

My idea:

A topic called: "Welcome New PEELers", where all the new people can say hello and the like. I understand 'Hi I'm New' Threads are always locked, but I think there should be General one.

So, what do you say?

Problem is such a thread would quickly be pushed out of the first page, due yo inactivity. Once it's left the first page, none of the new members will see anduse it. Heck, in some cases people wont even use a thread located halfway up on page 1.

PEEL doesn't support sticked threads, so that wont work either.

Believe it or not, people have opened general "Welcome"-threads over the years, none of them have worked. Just like the "General Futurama Question" threads.

This has probably been suggested before but why not have a Music board?
There are random music threads dispersed throughout the off-topic board but I think it would generate a lot more discussion if there was a dedicated board.  I like a wide variety of music so I would definitely be very active in it.

Spreading out over too many forums means too many boards to keep track off with not enough activity in each one. So claims mArc, and I bow to his expertise in this field.

I have supported turning the TV forum into a media forum for music, games and TV, but with no success. With no crashes in Off-Topic recently, this doesn't seem so high on the agenda.

Question: Why is that episode 'Raging Bender' constantly being featured? I assume it's tradition, like said above. I like it!

I think it's basically 1 part tradition, and 2 parts mArc not having time to be bothered changing it.

So yeah, i wouldn't expect it to change anytime soon.
