On the whole I think you did an excellent job.  Personally I prefer transparent backgrounds, but you managed to capture an impressive amount of detail in the tiny canvas you were rolling with.

What really sucks when I've been working on avatars lately is that irfanview doesn't support alpha transparency levels, so I can't use it for downsizing images even though it has the best resizing schemes I've ever used (great for .gif, not so much for .png)  So I end up using Gimp to work natively with png images, but it's really really hard to retain lines, and generally speaking I don't feel like spending 3 hours re-outlining an image to thicken them up and make them more pronounced.  Luckily I have discovered a few methods of blurring before the downsize that don't make the edges look too ragged while still retaining some of the detail.

You raise an interesting point about alpha channels and ragged edges. How I do mine at the moment is that I use PhotoShop and saving as a PNG-24 format seems to do a good job of retaining transparency - if, for example, you save without a background layer, then whatever is on top will have a transparent background, and you don't usually have to worry about the edges. Another example is that my current avatar is partially transparent in the top-right corner. I don't know how easy it is for other programs to save to PNG-24 - or whether this always works.

That said, one thing I have noticed with working with pngs is that Chrome, my default browser, displays the pngs with alpha-channels pretty much as the look like when I saved them. When seeing the same image on IE or Firefox then they suddenly look horribly ragged. I don't know if other people have noticed that in general when using pngs?

I suppose I had better set my sights on another event unless I use it tomorrow for "Day of the Dead (Mexico)," the next available holiday according to my desk calendar. I think I'll beg for a Frosty the Snowman version of my avatar, some snowflakes in the background with a top hat and carrot nose for Pazoozoo. Pazuzu. However it's spelled.

By the way, did I post the request in the right thread? I'm not asking out of impatience, but perhaps I did it wrongly in the wrong thread and everybody's too polite to tell me otherwise because I should really know better at my advanced age. I should probably clarify that I meant with the sky background removed and given semi-transparence, not like the one I was just sporting.

I've always wanted rat (see left) as my avatar, but I don't like the fact that he's slightly pixelated. Can someone please make a better quality one, or hell, even one with the background still in, i.e;

The lines are a little off for the one you already have, and the colors a bit different, but otherwise your current avatar is quite decent.

Avatars with backgrounds are not generally allowed, however.  It is preferable that avatars blend seamlessly with peel, as the avatar is meant as a personification of the individual.  Keeping in backgrounds generally creates the square image and detracts from the pleasant aesthetic appeal of peel.
