I just realized that my avatars are PNG files, and not gifs. Is that a problem or not cause they're both saved with transparent backgrounds?

Well I tried to change them but I noticed after the second one that the quality of the Gifs were worse than the PNGs. However, if they must absolutely be gifs then I guess I'll change them...

They DO have to be GIFs, and of course the quality will get worse, PNG is my favorite format, and GIF is my least favorite.

With a site of this size that's always trying to find a way to cut back on using space, using the smaller GIF files are better. Winna's avatar is 2.87 kb, while Disco Bender is 9.82 kb. When thinking that we have 11k members, a good sized pool of avatars, and maybe 500 custom avatars, having them be GIFs only helps.

That's the idea... but to be honest, I'm not absolutely certain why we actually have to worry about 7kb's of extra space; I realize that number is probably times 1000, but still.

Anyways, until mArc says otherwise trickster they actually do have to be in the .gif format.  Yes, there will be a degradation of quality, but that's why we have rules about making them look nice and why I tell some people their avatars have dirty nasty pixels.

Furthermore, mArc said season 6 avatars could be added to the pool, I just have to send him a .zip file of them, so if you want to keep making them (and you're doing a fantastic job), I'm certainly willing to package them up so that they can be with PEEL forever.

Btw, as a hint, when you save it in .gif format try making the background (aka transparent) color a color in between PEEL white and PEEL grey, then you'll be good to go.

Thanks for the tip winna. I'm somewhat obsessive with my avatars being as perfect as possible, so when I'm an inch away from the screen and can see some tiny white pixels, I feel the need to flip out

Generally, I like PNG better than GIF, but I'm not sure what the avatar selection script makes out of PNGs... So GIF it is for pool avatars for now. Fixed it, png is fine now, uploaded the robot Fry and Leela ones for testing.

The kb restriction is not so much about disk space but about loading speeds. These days, we can probably go a bit larger, but I would try to keep them under about 10kb.

winna: can you presort them into according sub-directories in the zip and name the files somewhat like we did before (lower case, using _ for space, artist name at end)? That'd be sweet.
