Was there ever a sneak peak of it on FOX like they did with Family Guy?  If so, when was it shown?

I've been watching family guy and futurama since they both started in 99 and to be honest, futurama is a great show, but family guy is funnier, it's shown in the sales of dvds

i am surprised fox even bothered with the ad in the mag, concidering they canceled futurama without warning, but spending ad money for a comercial, they almost seem proud

Could you be any wrong-er? I'm sure a bunch of PEELers are behind me on this: Fox didn't care for Futurama when they realized they couldn't rake in the big bucks on merchandize that they could (and still can) with The Simpsons. So they mushroomed Futurama and let it go to hell after they were thorugh with the original agreement (witch they interpreted with some real creativeness). Family Guy got better marketing (also, suburbian comedy just simply sells- simple as that) and I am quite sure that's what's reflecting itself upon the DVD sales.

The ONLY funny things about Family Guy is Stewie and that ONE joke about fathers being able to tell when someone fiddles with the thermostat...

I like Family Guy, it's a great show, I have the DVDs, but NOTHING has or ever will come close to being as good as Futurama.

I agree, family gut was good but it just can't come close to futurama. I normally get yelled at for saying this but i would even trade the Simpsons for more Futurama episodes.

Family Guy is funny, but I can only take it in small doses. I think it's a little obnoxious. IMO Futurama is cooler and funnier. And the stories are better.

I suppose Family Guy is more accessible, and I would chalk that up to DVD sales being better. Let's face it, not everybody likes math humor!

Back on topic....

The first two episodes of Futurama were called sneak previews because they aired on Sundays instead of the regular time on Tuesday.

Well, in my opinion, Family Guy and Futurama are pretty much equal in the popularity range. However, Futurama's demographic is a bit more spread out, while Family Guy's popularity is concentrated in teenage males. We are the ones who buy DVDs the most, and it shows in the sales. My theory.

My opinion on FG? An occasionally funny show without much lasting appeal (Brian and Quagmire rule though).

This USE to be about what fox did before futurama came out.  I saw a newspaper artical about this new show by the maker of the simpsons.  I thought it looked weird.  boy was I wrong!!!

different kind of humour i think. Futurama is a more rounded solid show with more depth, good characters and stories whereas Family Guy is a bit more BAM kinda humour. That was why it was probably more successful. Ive got all of the Family Guys on DVD but i cant think of a single episode that stands out in my memory.

Oh, I hope we don't get into another long-winded discussion about which is better. (Cause Futurama TOTALLY is...) But, I still can't see why Family Guy DVD's are better sellers. You would think the whole "fat father suburban sitcom" genre was getting old. (We all know how many of these there are...) I will admit that the humor is funny, it being so random. But, simply that does not a comedy make. You need CLEVER humor like in Futurama, with some randomness thrown in. But, I could ramble forever on how much better Futurama is, so I'll just say this: It is.

Well Cloud 9,you just said it yourself; Futurama uses Clever humor, which goes over a lot of people's heads. So, A) it's science fiction vs.typical(and topical) suburban humor. B) It makes you have to think occasionaly. I just think FG can reach a wider audience. I have lots of friends who like Simpsons and FG but they don't all like Futurama.

Futurama is a show based on the characters and the development of their personalities/relationships.  And because of that, its just harder to build up a fan base.  If you didn't see the some of the earlier episodes, I'm sure you wouldn't like it, because the rest of the show wouldn't make any sense.  It's one of those shows you just have to watch from the beginning.  But Family Guy is a show based on verbal jokes, more than subtle humor, and its more direct and easier to understand.  If you don't get the subtle jokes on Futurama, it wouldn't be all that funny, just confusing (like why people hate Zoidberg for no reason).

There was a neat preview article in TV Guide before Futurama was launched, had Bender on the cover. I wish I had snagged the copy thatw as on EBay recently. Poor judgement on my part, because now I wish I had it.

If you really like it, you'll learn.  The 1st episode I saw was Where The Buggalo Roam (when it was new), and I liked it so much that I am now the biggest Futurama watcher in my town (23,000+ people).

Also Family Guy is easily to relate to. Everyone has a family so older people can relate to it as they have had a family and younger people are starting one and even children (those that the bad language etc. can float over their heads) like it because its got Stewie whereas Futuramas main characters are in thier mid twenties so its difficult for everyone to relate to them. Not that many can relate to being sent into the future if you're not a Sci-fi fan. And finally sci-fi is seen as a dirty word for many people i know loads of people who stay well away from it.

I wasn't much of a sci-fi fan, but I still could sense something great about Futurama, and now I like other sci-fi stuff too. (Just not as much)  :D
