Jay is a possibility, but now I'm thinking that Joseph is also likely, as his father may have wanted to honor a certain Wisconsin senator from the 1950s.

^apart from the fact that "Yancy" begins with a "Y", not a "J".  smile

I don't think it is Jay, purely because that is Homer's middle name and I don't think Matt Groening would use that joke twice, as it wouldn't be as funny the second time.

As to what it is, no idea. Maybe it doesn't stand for anything? (like the "S" in "Harry S Truman" ). After all, when we see baby Fry in "Luck Of The Fryrish", his nametage on his cot says "Philip J Fry", not his full name.

I'm sorry, I just had to say something. Sarcasm is lost on you isn't it?

Now as for Fry's middle name. I think James or Jason fits him quite well. A fanfic I read said his middle name was Jody. That just doesn't fit, particulary since it's a girl's name.

i would say Jay is frys middle name, on the grounds that groening made both simpsons and futurama and the main characters both have J. for their middle initial. Homers middle name is Jay, or so ive been told by a friend of mine whos as big of a simpson nazi as i am to futurama.

I think Philip James Fry has the best ring to it. And it suits fry so well.

But I was wondering... I had an arguement with a friend about his middle name, I said no one knew what it was, he said it was Jason. I said, "How do you know that" he answered "It appeared in an ep. in season 5." Now we all know there were only 4 seasons, correct? (Although it was aired in 5 TV seasons right?) But anyway, can you guys clear this up, his name has never appeared has it? Just to settle the arguement.

Sorry but just had to add my comments to this.
I can't believe that Jay is leading the poll. I mean why would anyone want to give Fry the same middle name as Homer.

Well, I know Matt named Fry Phip because Phil Hartman was supposed to be the voice of Zapp Brannigan, so who knows what his first name was originally gonna be, or if he'd still have the J. initial

Probably because for the reasons that were already mentioned on the first page on this thread.   smile

It's interesting that there seems to be no discussion about the Professor's middle name...   tongue

Hmmm....missed voting in this one.  Nice find, PumaGirl.

Anyway, I voted for James, although Joseph would also be a good bet, seeing as those two are quite common Irish names (okay, perhaps James is more English...sue me) and I'm fairly certain Fry's family is of Irish origins.  Joseph could also, as Unknown mentioned like two years ago, be in honor of McCarthy, who was quite likely Yancy Fry Sr.'s childhood idol.  Come to think of it, I probably should have voted Joseph.  I just think James sounds better.  And unfortunately, we can't look to Fry's namesake for ideas, as he was named for the late Philip E. Hartman.  Oh well.

Random thought: "Yancy" could in theory be spelled with a J...if you were from Scandinavia.

Uhh.. *ahem* Rachel J.? I dunno... Naw it sounds kinda cool. Better than "h" Jay seems quite probable, but I guessed it could possible be James, because it sounds right. You do know it seems a tradition to give any character a "J" in the middle of their name... Sheldon J. Plankton, Squiward J. Tentacles....and not to mention a load of Futurama and Simpson characters with "J" being the middle initial of choice.

I honestly think his middle name is 'Jay'.  Also, my middle initial is 'J', my middle name is Jamison.

Phillip Jay Fry.  That's his full name.  Or maybe we'll find out for sure when those movies on DVD come out.

I doubt it was very hard for her to find after I posted a link to it when the subject came up in another thread.

What's this doing in General Discussion anyway?  Shouldn't it be in Human Resources?
