in the commentary for this episode david cohen says that it was inspired by a book/short story by Stanislaw Lem. does anyone know the title of the story or the name of the book it appears in?

It's one of the stories in the book "The Star Diaries".

The Star Diaries is the English edition of about half of the stories from Lem's book called Dzienniki Gwiazdowe.

The fun thing is that I just read "The Star Diaries" a week after FOABP was aired for the first time in Germany.
A was really puzzled by the similarity when I began to read it.
3 years later, when I got the DVD's the inspiration was approved.....what a coincidence.....

Wow, that is amazing!  A similar thing happened to me.  Right from the beginning, I had the suspicion that Bender putting the coin into the suicide booth and yanking it out came from this Donald Duck cartoon called Modern Inventions, in which Donald Duck does the same thing (he has a coin tied on a string on his finger, and put it into these coin operated machines and yanked it out).  Once I heard the commentaries, it turned out I was correct!

It's Stanisław, not Stanislaw.
