Before Futurama everyone enjoyed the Simpsons but with Futurama most Simpsons fans converted into Futurama fans.

I wish that was true, if it was Futurama wouldn't be the show getting cancelled.

I'm curious...are there any Futurama fans that weren't first Simpsons fans? I was and still am a huge Simpsons fan, though Futurama has surpassed it in my mind.

I know we can't say that all Simpsons fans are Futurama fans. But, I thought it could be said that all Futurama fans are classic Simpsons fans.

I actually got into the Simpsons rather late, around Season 7 IIRC. Thanks to it being in syndication, I was able to quickly catch up with the previous seasons and quickly became hooked. I still continue to enjoy the show and find enough good humor to keep watching. I can't ever imagine reaching a point where I would stop watching the show.

With Futurama, it was love at first sight  :) When I heard that Matt Groening was coming out with a sci-fi themed animation series, I knew it would be great. I just couldn't have imagined it being this good! I hope that the show will have a long run in syndication so future generations will have a chance to discover this fine show.

The Simpson has the slowest most agonizing death of a show, FOX did the same thing to married with children, dregged it out for more money.  I love the old simpsons episodes, the ones that are more realistic.  I think thats what made them funny, now the plots are so outlandish, mainly because they have done every situation possible.  I love Futurama, I love the old Simpsons, that used to be my whole sunday night with friends watching the new Simpsons and then Futurama.  Both shows had incredable staffing, I blame FOX for dragging out the Simpsons and pulling the plug on Futurama. Thats what turned alot of people off to the Simpsons, it just used up all the possible plot scenarios, people who grew up on the show thought "what the hell happened" and people who tunned in for the first time got instantly turned off to the show. I think if I were in Matt's position I would have gone postal.  They cancled the show that he wanted to go on and dragged out the show he wanted let die with dignity.

It sounds liek these new Simpsons episodes aren't loved much, i'm ok though, i don't have cable and in the UK we're a wee bit behind on all these new episodes.
I think the reason i like Futurama better is because I identify with the main characters a lot more, how old do you think Fry and Leela are?  Maybe mid 20's I'm sure some of you know.  The Simpsons is all about families while the people in Futurama are young adults like a lot of the people who "grew up" watching the Simpsons.

I dont think The Simpsons are expericencing any sort of slow death. If anything the quality has picked back up in recent seasons. Seasons 11 and 13 are two of my favorites.

I love every season up to and including 13, it's really just the last few episodes in the current season 14 that I've found...... just so average, and forgetable.

Seasons 11-now of The Simpsons just sucked hard.

Right around the time they had mostly Homer acting like a dumb a$$hole centered episodes.

I like the old Simpsons (1-7) better than Futurama, but the new ones stink. That said it is still one of the better shows on Fox.

Overall I like Futurama better, because I like the characters better.

As for the Coke analogy before, I guess that means Futurama is Pepsi.  ;)

The Simpsons used to be my favorite show. I never missed an ep. I now find myself missing the new eps. and rewatching the old eps. I just feel the new ones have lost their zeal and now there's never a moment where the writers aren't begging Fox to cancel them. I wouldn't be suprised if they show a scene where a writer or animator says "PLEASE stop making me do this! I'm so tired. The eps. aren't even that good anymore." In response, he is whipped, told to stop whining and get back to work.

Wow. I got here late, but as The First Futurama Ultrafanatic That Hates The Simpsons(tm), I had to post something. Hell, I remember all too well all the comments that went my way a couple of years ago in the Outlet boards when I said, "The Simpsons Suck". But really, I find The Simpsons absolutely boring. Back in 1990 when it premiered down here, I saw the first couple of episodes and thought, "I hope this piece o' crap won't last more than a year". I am now convinced that The Simpsons have lasted this long just to piss me off, since I loved Futurama from episode zero one, thought it DID deserve 15 plus seasons... and it's cancelled after four. Gah. Curse you, TV Demons! Just doing the opposite of what I want, only because I hate TV. Oh well...

I loved the Simpsons on Tracy Ullman. For that matter, I loved "Life in Hell" since it first appeared in the LA Reader. And, while the Simpsons had a few bad seasons (11-12 in particular), I still watch it (and it's gotten better, for those who stopped watching 3 years ago).

But Futurama is so much better than the Simpsons (or Life in Hell) at its best that it's really a moot point....

By the way, Leandro, the reason they always do the exact opposite of what you want may be because you're exactly the opposite of their target consumer. When you make a show that appeals to people who hate TV, you're not creating a good audience to sell to the advertisers.

Its true that the eps arent as good as earlier seasons. but its about the only good program on now with new episodes on a consistant basis.

i only had basic tv when growing up so we had the same 3 seasons of simpsons on some sort of cycle for years cos the stupid channel wdnt buy newer ones. the problem ws it was on at dinner and was the program that we argued least about when we chose what to watch. as a result i find myself unable to watch the first few seasons at all as ive seen them so many times before. i think i have simpsons fatigue!

the newer seasons are just plain bizarre tho. i tried and tried butvi cant get into something where the plot jackknifes from one thing to another without any sort of link whatsoever.

random isnt the same as funny

I just watched the simpsons and Homer and Bart were watching tv. i swear i expected to see the PE crew when the view of the show on the tv zoomed out.  Also, Futurama has so much better animation than the Simpsons not too mention the characters are so much more lovable  :)

not sure the characters are more loveable
most people (not on this forum) would disagree with that.

simpsons just has a lot more comedy.
i actually prefer it.

but i'm more attracted to this place
because things that have such huge mainstream appeal like the simpsons put me off a bot

The simpsons was brilliant when it came to our screens and reached a peak in the late nighties (i don't know which particular season because they've made so many), but noticeably since futurama came to our screens simpsons has gone down hill.
whether its because futurama showed us a new level
or matt concentrated more on futurama
or they have run out of ideas for simpsons i can't say but one things for sure. The simpsons has changed from taking the piss out of celebrities (who deserve it) to kissing celebrities asses (who don't deserve it) and inviting them to guest star
in conclusion, the futurama is much better than the simpsons as it raised the bar of great writing, great characters and a lack of respect for PC gone mad!
note that i do not dislike the simpsons.

even though I grew up with the simpsons I have lost interest in that show, makes no sense any more. Futurama is 100x better than the simpsons
And I have an Idea, we all should try and boycott the simpsons movie or something along the lines of that

Like most people here, I like the older episodes of the simpsons, but find the newer aren't as goo, I do like in the UK though and we are way behind with them, I must admit I am looking forward to when the episode of the simpsons with Tony Blair comes onto British TV, I hope they really ripped the s**t out of him in that episode.

And just for the record, I think Futurama is way better then the Simpsons, in my opinion it's the best program that's been on TV, ever.

I still like The Simpsons. While the newer episodes aren't great, they're still better than a lot of shows on TV. (Though I do think that Futurama is much, much better than even some classic Simpsons episodes.)

My opinion of Matt Greoning is both good and bad.  I don't like Matt because he created The Simpsons, but I do like Matt because he created Futurama.  I only liked The Simpsons for the first 2-3 seasons.  Then I got so sick of them.  There's only so much a writer can do with an animated dysfunctional family.  As I've said before, it's been done to death!  Why can't FOX get another show to be it's cash cow?  I almost prefer Family Guy and American Idol to The Simpsons!

I agree with Futurama_Hil.  Futurama should be in it's place!  The Simpsons has had it's day in the sun, let something new take it's place!  Hell, The Simpsons is getting more recocnition than King of the Hill!

The Simpsons is the best! The newest episodes aren't that good, but the older Simpsons, even up to only a season or two ago is still hilarios! The only thing that is funnier than the Simpsons is Futurama.

You mean American Dad? Also, if you're talking about new Simpsons, than of course Family Guy is funnier. You make it sound as if FG is bad, although based on your opinion of the Simpsons, that's not far-fetched for you. The Simpsons and FG are both great shows that I'm sure most PEELers like, and for you to like Futurama, but detest those shows, I find far-fetched. But I guess that's what this threads here for...

AD is okay, but if you are talking about Idol, then they don't compare, waaaay to different...

[sarcastic]The Simpsons? More recognition than KOTH??? Get Out!!![/sarcastic] OF COURSE IT GETS MORE RECOGNITION THAN KOTH!!!!! BY A LONG SHOT!!! It's the longest lasting cartoon ever, super-popular, all ages find it hilarious, greatest show on TV. KOTH is just another cartoon that some people hate and some find it okay. Not all that popular. The Simpsons gets more recognition than any show on TV I believe.

The Simpsons stopped being brilliant at the start of season 9; everything since then has ranged from hit-or-miss to downright awful, usually leaning toward the latter.  But since it's such a money machine, I doubt it will ever truly die--and the fans who grew up with the post-S9 series as their template may never understand why the new episodes are so hated.

Futurama, on the other hand, was ingenious from the word "Go" and carried maybe a handful of bum episodes in all of its four seasons.  It carried an enormous amount of potential that was never tapped ("Mass Hypnosis Hour", anyone?), and will be sorely missed by its loyal fanbase for a long time.
