What do you think is the best of the two? Personally i'm a Simpsons freak, so i can't turn away from them, Futurama get ten out of ten for me but simpsons is 5 times better. I can't quite put my finger on why it is better, but i think its the fact that it has been around for longer and we have gotten used to the characters better, i also think the characters are better in the simpsons... in a way.
I guess the way to put it would be, Futurama has better characters than the Simpsons but the Simpsons has a better connection between thier charcaters, making for a better show... Anyways have your turn now, why do you like one more than the other? or do you like them equally?

Keep it real

IMO Futurama and Simpsons cannot really be compared with each other, so I won't try to do so.

Welcome, Rage Dump, and enjoy it here.

Was this really wise to put a Simpsons vs Futurama topic on a FUTURAMA board.

I like the old simpsons, but the new simpsons isnt a shadow of its former self. I'd almost say I cant stand new simpsons.

Some times if there is a brand new simpsons on I'd rather tune into an old one.

Futurama is almost like the simpson with a clean slate, not tired and used, fresh and new, and MUCH funnier, also I like sci fi so its pure bliss for me

Let me guess, most of the people at the Simpsons Board favoured the Simpsons?

I don't really think you can compare them...Futurama is certainly as good, if not better than the "classic" Simpsons episodes. When you compare Futurama to S14 Simpsons episodes, then yes - Futurama is better. But if you compare Futurama to S2 / S3 Simpsons, I wouldn't be so sure...

maybe you should run a poll Rage Dump

I'd choose futurama over any of the simpson's seasons, but still the last few episodes of S14 have been pretty good actually. They're getting back to classic simpson's humour which is a good thing coz the episodes were all over the place and just not "haha" funny but more "m'eh" funny.

At the moment I'd say Futurama, because I've seen all the Simpsons eps from the good seasons hundreds of times. If I was seeing both shows for the first time, I'm not sure what I'd say.

Futurama all they way, the simpsons had a few good series but futurama has been great from the world go. Also who are the memerable characters from the simpsons, Homer and Bart, from Futurama there is Fry, Bender, Leela and Zoidberg.

The old simpsons episodes and futurama are neck and neck for me, like grimm said simpsons with a clean slate.  the old staff of the simpsons was great, matt g. had control over what went on the air.  Not like now, where the simpsons is just a money machine and no one really cares about the quality of the shows.  The simpsons takes the title for slowest, most excruciating death of a show ever, it even beats out Married with children.

There are more bad episodes of the simpsons than there are of futurama in ratio to the good episodes - so if you can understand that then you'll know I'm choosing Futurama!

Hey guys, am I late for the public lynching? I even brought my own torch!

Anyway, Futurama had like 5 poor episodes, and they weren't even that bad; just not as good as the rest. The Simpsons had 2 or 3 seasons in the crapper, and not all the episodes from the 'good' seasons were good either. Plus, Futurama is simply a notch higher than The Simpsons - the characters are deeper and more vivid, the plotlines are a LOT more involved and more interesting, and the humor is just as sharp if not shaper. It's Groening's second baby, and he did it better this time. Futurama all the way.

The way I can think of to best put my feelings is this. Futurama is animation, whereas The Simpsons is (at least now) a cartoon. I won't say that one style is better, simply that my preference is the former. As sheep555 said, if I were to put an earlier Simpsons season against Futurama, then the contest would be closer, but as it stands, it's a no-brainer for me.

Futurama has what Simpsons doesn't, Charachter development. Each character develops in some way throughout the season. Like the Fry and Leela love story has been developing throughout it's 4(official) season run, and it will finally payoff in "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings". The Simpsons has no Character development since seasons 1-4, and the humor is becoming sort of off putting. In short Futurama is better.

Echoing previous sentiment, Futurama also has/had a predetermined story arc (of sorts). Placing an element into the very first episode, which would be payed off after key revelations were made throughout the series, is wonderful. The 'Nibbler shadow' arc was fabulous, as it kept all of us guessing for 4 (5) years, and gave the show a subplot which could continue to be worked on if it had continued.

The Fry/Leela shippiness, though annoying to a lot of people, has given the show a lot of depth, beyond the usual 'Will they? Won't they?" setup of other shows. The bounds of Futurama are a lot wider than the Simpsons' (or, than the Simpsons should be) and have allowed for some amazing stories.

Futurama has proven itself as the better show overall to me. The Simpsons just continues to embarrass itself now. Since season 10 it has been pretty much dead. They should have let it die in peace rather than dragging it's bloated corpse behind the FUX bloodwagon.

I definately prefer Futurama by a looooong way  :) I mean, just as an example, would, or even could The Simpsons ever have a plot like 'The Sting'? I know it's different, but there's a whole lot more depth in Futurama  :)

I do like the Simpsons, but as CyberKnight has said, The Simpsons are a cartoon, Futurama is animation.  The plots are so much better, and character depthand development as well.  The Simpsons never has a real problem, or single plot.  But Futurama is more of a story.  Futurama has almost all the elements of a story, while the Simpsons just has comedy.  Futurama is more of a story, while the Simpsons are a show to make you laugh.  The Simpsons are slowly fading, but Futurama will never fade- there's so much you can put into it even if it dies on tv.  If it gets back in ten years, it'll be just as good whereas the Simpsons won't.  Basically, Futurama has a better story and it  seems like many shows don't have that today.

I agree with the guy above that you can't compare them. I'd say the Simpsons have had a few episodes funnier than any Futurama episode (such as the one with the Dental plan + power plant strike), but the Simpsons has never had success in my opinion with emotional episodes such as Futurama. I am much more attached to the Futurama characters, primarily because they act more like normal people than Simpsons characters. (except Zoidberg.. guh!)

In the end, its probably quality over quantity. I would take Futurama 1-4 over Simpsons 1-4, but I would take Simpsons 1-9 over Futurama 1-4. There is just a lot more comedy in those nine seasons. Blame Fox for that.

i used to be the biggest simpsons fan, but now i prefer futurama. but that's probably b/c the simpsons has gotten so much worse. futurama has always been a hell of a lot more consistent. and now, it seems smarter as well; i've always admired the simpsons for it's crudeness, but a less crude futurama is much more appealing.

I disagree. There was once a time when I felt for the characters, and they had some good emotional moments. They were slowly replaced by episodes about Homer getting raped by a panda.

Futurama and the Simpsons are two very different shows, and you can't really compare them.  That said, Futurama is a thousand times better!
Not only is it much more consistent than the Simpsons, in my opinion Futurama at its best beats The Simpsons' best any day.

Even just comparing the good seasons of Simpsons to Futurama, they're both very different shows.  Simpsons DOES have very good emotional and character based stuff, even today (just look at Moe Baby Blues, written by J. Stewart Burns no less and better then much of his Futurama work, as an example).  But basically, Simpsons is a down to earth (tangents like monorails aside) show about a middle class family and a social satire, and also tends to have stories that are "confined", that is, that they completely begin and end in the 30 minutes.  Futurama is a more continous crazy sci-fi show, that also has character stuff but goes a route that a story doesn't have to completely end in 30 minutes, and also has some social commentary, but has a lot less and is mostly of a different variety.

And, its also hard to compare them because of the differences in eras.  To sort of say what I said at the No Homers Club topic, I like Futurama a ton more then Simpsons seasons 9+ (and keep in mind I still like seasons 9, 13, and the second part of season 14).  But at the same time, I far prefer seasons 1-8.  I'll go with Futurama, as its more consistant on the whole (Simpsons started great, stayed consistant for an amazingly long time, then bottomed out into crap, recent upswing aside), though even Futurama didn't get REALLY good til season 3, while Simpsons started at its peak to begin with.

*raises hand*

I stopped watching on a regular basis two years ago, but, sometimes, I just get bored or someone whom I'm with turns it on. It's sad that that "The Simpsons" is hardly worth my time any more. I rarely even watch the syndicated episodes anymore.

They never show any good episodes in syndication. Just the newer crap, over and over and over and over again. And they haven't come out with any DVD sets past season two. It's like they're trying to make us forget that it was once a great show. Sons of bitches.

The reason I prefer Futurama over the Simpsons, (All Humor Aside) is that I can level with Fry a lot more than I can level with Homer. We all know how it is to percieved as dumb, and have a girl you're nuts about reject you. With The Simpsons, it was more a take on the  proverbial American Family, and as a teenager, i really don't have a family.

The Simpsons characters used to be deep, and I used to care about them, but in the recent episodes, they are mainly just one-dimensional hallows used for belting out one-liners. (See Also Chandler Bing)

Quoting Lisa Simpson from the episode  "Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie"

"Um, excuse me, sir. The thing is, there's not really anything wrong with "The Itchy and Scratchy Show" It's as good as ever. But after so many years, the characters just can't have the same impact they once had"

Chances are that if FOX did plug the show, and it was widley recieved as it should have been, it would have gone down the same road as The Simpsons. Things just can't go on forever. Such is a metaphor for life. I just hope that the Futurama team realized this before it was too late.
