on http://www.jumptheshark.com/  3 people said that futurama jumped the shark because of "Casting Billy West". I'm no voice actor expert but from what I hear on the futurama commentary he seems to be one of the best there is. any thoughts on this?

Billy West is a great voice actor.

He voiced the M5438 (the gas-alien in "Loves Labour's Lost in Space" ) without any technology aiding him, he's that good.

Just that some people on Jump The Shark are morons.

They Did It (Fry and Layla):1 What the hell... That was a What If.... story.
Layla's Origin is revelaed:1 While I agree that they should've waited for that revelation until much later, this is ridiculous. What about TMLH and Jurrasic Bark? And it's Leela!
Day one: 23 How can a show jump before it airs?

etc, etc, etc

What are you on? Billy West is one of the best voice-over artists in the industry, if not the best!

newhook_1, look at my last post.

The original idea of jumptheshark.com was for people to express their opinions on where TV shows started to go downhill. i.e. when Fonzie jumped the shark.

Instead the site's being used by brainless idiots to beat up on shows they simply never liked, hence all the "Futurama jumped the shark on day one/for hiring Billy West" votes.

To "partially" answer the original question: Some people are still pissed off at Billy West for not giving credit to John Kricfalusi, the original voice of Ren from Ren and Stimpy. On an interview on Conan, Billy said his influences for the voice were Peter Lorre and Kirk Douglas, who were John K.'s influences for Ren's voice, and some people got pissed off at West. But that reason doesn't account for everyone.

              and
El Zilcho,
Thanks for clearing that up, though after rereading my orginal post may not of been clear I was just wondering why people would hate billy west like that.

Imagine that, people have differing opinions on the WORLD WIDE WEB, of all places!

Incidently, Billy West and Tress Mcneille(sp?) are the official god and goddess of voice-overs, with John Dimaggio as a close second.

Well, then bring us the one you call McNeille and Futurama can be saved. Not really, but I thought it would be funny to make a reference to "When Aliens Attack." Liven the situation a bit, you know?

I don't care if Billy is the biggest dick on the planet in real life, I love his voice work and have for years.

I first heard (and loved) Billy on Howard Stern's radio show years ago and thought his Ren and Stimpy work was hilarious (and no, he didn't owe John K. anything as Billy was just a paid actor.  John was fired and whether it was deserved or not, Billy would have been stupid to say no to taking over Ren.)  It was learning that Billy was doing a bunch of Futurama voices that brought me to the show much more than its Simpsons pedigree.

As others have mentioned, JumptheShark.com is entertaining in its concept, but a lot of morons who post there are, well, morons.

I think Billy West does a great job with his voices, although he wasn't so good in the first few episodes of season 1.

But then again, who HAS gotten in to all the voices on a new TV show when it first starts?

Well, for one, TNN has comissioned Spumco for new episodes of Ren & Stimpy (a bit of old news, I know), and its hard to imagine Billy not returning to voice Stimpy once again.

Even though he's not a series regular, Maurice LaMarche is also one of the great talents on the show. He does Morbo and Kif, and he's done Brain on "Pinky & the Brain." He has a voice-acting resume longer than your arm. For more, see this post: http://www.peelified.com/cgi-bin/Futurama/3-000339-1/

Also there's Dave Herman, who does some voices. Along with the people already pointed out, plus Katey Sagall, this group does most of the voices for the show.
