the arrogant Dabljuh This guy... this's th'guy... Seriously, who the hell are you to insult us? Seems to me you have some sort of irrational hatred of alcohol. Apparently, anyone who enjoys a beer now and then is an alcoholic. Never mind that scientists have shown that one drink a day can be beneficial... The only character on Futurama who drinks heavily is Bender, and he's obviously not meant to be a role model. Likewise with The Simpsons. Who aspires to be Barney? Or Homer? Face it, your arguments have not been thought out. You have no support for your position, so you've resorted to insults. You've lost. Go away. Now.

I think the real question is: "who really cares?"
The reson theres alcahol in futurama and simpsons is because its FUNNY, we laugh when homer gets drunk or when bender gets not drunk. There is no hidden meaning to the show. Just enjoy the show and don't think about it.
Here, have a beer. <Alpha hands Dabljuh a beer> <Dabljuh refuses mumbling something like "think of the children!"> <Alpha smashes the bottle over Dabljuh's head> <Dabljuh falls to the ground unconsious. Alpha sticks a new beer into his mouth>
Another victory for alcahol!

Its for crying out loud. I do not mind alcohol, but I find alcoholism is a serious and destrucktive disease.
The way alcoholism (and also alcohol) is handled in Futurama and The Simpsons let me believe that it has a personal meaning to groening.
I just found out, Groenings'Fathers name was Homer. Thats all i know, unless someone hands me the email of Matt.
Go on, drink beer - i dont mind. I was only asking this one fucking question.

Your one fucking question is idiotic. How are we supposed to know if alcohol has a deep meaning for Groening? Anyway Groening doesn't write the episodes.

Groening doesnt write the episodes, but he is advising the team at about every opportunity. And, of course, he has designed the characters of The Simpson and Futurama.
Yes, The Simpsons were strongly inspired by Groenings own Family. Im almost positive that Homer Groening and Homer Simpson have a lot in common. Especially the Alcoholism. Matt Groening himself was drawing cartoons since he could hold a pencil, and was strongly supported by his father, an cartoonist himself. But alcoholics in families isnt that nice.
Anyone got Matt's Email? Id like to ask him personally...

@Iliketowankalot: Its your decision. Ask him yourself, if you like.
I guess the Amazonian thing was not much more than an erotic fantasy or something like that. I dont mind the erotic stuff in Futurama, and I like the subtle relationship between Leela and Fry. At least the sex stuff makes it a little more clear that Futurama isnt the show for 8 year olds.

.... And i know, if it really had, that would be the reason why alcohol is handled differently in the show than other drugs... Or perhaps it's that Groening is a product of Western (particularly Christian--even more particularly American Protestant) Civilization, which treats alcohol (and nicotine and caffeine) differently from any other drugs. Groening is also a child of the 60s, which gives him some insight beyond this world-view. The Prohibition jokes are obviously a dig at the current drug prohibition; there's also Homer's psychedelic journey on the Guatemalan insanity pepper and the kids' various psychedelic journeys on various substances (including beer dregs, if I remember correctly). Also, compare Otto (habitual marijuana abuser) and Barney (habitual alcohol abuser)--they're both somewhat disgusting buffoons; despite the fact that Barney's drug of choice is legal, he's not shown in any better light. However, when Groening isn't directly satirizing our society's differing treatment of alcohol and other drugs, he probably falls into it without thinking. Does that answer your question? If not, here's one more point, specific to Futurama: Most drugs affect different species differently. You can get just about any animal drunk or high on xenon. And most mammals are affected the same way by the same psychedelic amphetamines (MDMA, DOB). On the other hand, the more complex phenethylamines (e.g., mescaline, 2C-B) are pretty species-specific; a-2C-T has no effect on humans but affects chimpanzees, while the very similar chemical 2C-T-2 has no effect on chimps but affects humans, while both will kill sheep at very low doses. And some chemicals (e.g., complex tryptames like 5-MeO-DIPT) are even more specific, having an entirely different effect on different people. So, we can assume that, in a future filled with aliens, the social drugs of choice will be those that affect most species. Alcohol, nitrous oxide, and noble gases are the obvious choices. Ethanol is also a decent lubricant and cleanser and a very good fuel, so it's plausible that it could be of use to robots, but what could they possibly want with most of our other drugs? So, in Futurama, Groening is actually being scientifically rigorous (although this is probably completely by accident). Any more questions, or can we drop this now?

What affect did monkeys have on Groening, In the Simpsons Granpa wanted to eat the helper monkey and in Futurama the Prof wanted to eat gunter. Maybe Groening was sexualy abused by monkeys as a kid and this is how he gets his revenge.
BTW I was also mocking Dabijuh
