David Cohen is definitely a big rap fan. He was apparently instrumental in getting Cypress Hill on The Simpsons back in the day, and he was working with Coolio on a project (which never got off the ground) for a while after Futurama was first cancelled. And even outside of the guest stars the show has actually had tons of references to classic hip-hop, probably my favorite being the title "Fear of a Bot Planet" (after the classic Public Enemy album "Fear of a Black Planet"). And who could forget Fry and his 80s crew trying to win the Jam Master Jay parachute pants?

The east/west coast rappers line is actually one of my favorites in the show and I don't even think you need to care about rap to get it really; if you were alive and paying attention at all to the news during the 90s, you probably would have caught at least a whiff of what they were referring to.

Oh, and EVER showing "Shawn" would completely kill the joke. Bringing back some ex would be fine I suppose, but have it be someone else. The whole joke is that you never see him.

Exactly. A 90s pop culture reference (gasp! Yes, they can be funny) during a Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony. The dichotomy was deliciously funny.
