I was holding out that the machine might have chosen Fry for the whole brain wave/chosen one thing, but the pants line was a huge laugh for my roommate and I, so I wasn't too concerned.

My only problem was the middle act being a little too similar to the Y2K segment from an old Treehouse of Horror episode. They HAD to take the "limited evacuation" route though to set up the last act, so again, it's easily forgivable.

Is it possible that the gravity between both planets helped cause Fry and Leela's arms to rip?

Went into this one with fairly high expectations, and I'd give this one an 8.5/10.

The running gag on Fry's pants was a bit immature but it fit with his character. Nixon was great as always (Found the Washington Redskins jab pretty good, and I like the fact that Mars' indigenous people played a role). The Fry/Leela stuff was well done (although I thought the arms at the very end were a tiny bit excessive. The writing on the part of Fry and Leela was definitely better than last season, it seemed more natural and understandable. It was a tiny bit predictable, but overall a well-done episode.

I really hope they don't just hit the reset button on Mars being torn apart and blasted out of orbit. Let's have a little solar system-related mayhem that actually takes!

What does it mean for the Wongs, for example? Is their buggalo ranch empire still viable? Is Mars U going to keep on trucking?

Time to elaborate on my thoughts. 8/10. Why? Well... (brace yourselves)  :laff:

I finally believe they're on the right track towards doing Leela's character justice. Perhaps that's reading into it a bit but let's face it - most, if not all Leela-centric episodes have been detrimental to most people's opinion of her, and I believe she needs to be redeemed. Her character still has so much potential, but other than being a strong woman and Fry's love interest, I feel they've never quite known what to do with her. I pray season 7 does this. I think it will.

The shippy-ness was plentiful and not overpowering and forced - other than TLPJF, I don't think they've managed to do that with some F/L episodes in the new run. If that's a taste of what what's in store for Fry and Leela this season, I'm as happy as a squid on Wednesday (given I'd have gotten frisky the day before).

And most importantly, they used the entire PE team and used them WELL. No one felt out of place, everyone had a good amount of air time and a role.

All round, I think they made a hell of a good episode and while absurd and improbable, the arm gag made my day.

I'd like to start off by going back a page to Unmentionable's complaints and saying that Fry has always been hurt often on the show; That's not a complaint about what Futurama has become, that's more of a complaint about Futurama in general. Of course, I'm not madly in love with Fry so I tend to find it funny when he gets hurt, because it's always funny when it happens to someone else (unless you're Unmentionable and it's Fry getting hurt, I guess).

Anyways, on to this episode review:

This one also had some very good laugh-out-loud jokes and I thought the animation at certain points looked really cool.

I liked the whole Fry and Leela shippiness, since it felt sort of natural rather than "Hey! This is going to be a really shippy episode so FEEL THE LOVE!" Or something.

I didn't see the twist with Mars being the planet getting destroyed coming, so that was fun. Even though it was sort of a current pop culture reference (Gasp! Dear God, no!), the Tron Legacy joke made me laugh enough that it didn't really bother me at all.

Overall, a solid 8/10, making it just a bit better than The Bots and the Bees.

Good one! Much like s07e01 it was consistently funny and emotional, and it was extremely action-packed while at the same time well paced. There were lots of funny and interesting things, and I enjoyed the overall story and the twist (which I didn't see coming at all). I was surprised at the choosing machine, as I had thought it wouldn't choose Leela due to her broken leg (finding her malfunctioning).

Oh, and Fry's constant "hold my hand" made me think that it was another The Sting story with Leela unconscious and Fry by her bed, but it seemed more and more unlikely the deeper into the story we came.

I was a little annoyed by the scientific inaccuracies of Mars and Earth almost colliding. The gravity fields were totally inaccurate - even if Mars and Earth were exactly as massive the characters would be floating in between them, and now that Earth is a lot more massive the characters would have lifted off the surface of Mars and fallen onto Earth. Still, it worked alright and made for some fun animation.

This is the main thought ringing around in my head since I watched this ep.  I really hope that Mars stays as a satellite of Earth, and to hell with the realism of it all.  It's just so cool.  (Though it is more likely that Mars will simply return to it's rightful place with no explanation, which I gotta admit is quite funny.)

9/10 from me. The scenes with Mars right next to Earth were very awesome. Loved how they re-used the Birth Machine, and there were some awesome jokes. Futurama is definately back, baby! :D

Also, I like how it took Singing Wind 10 years to return to Mars and get his stuff. :laff:

10/10

Cause I'm a big shipper and there was a big ship there.

Also I'm rather high (on chocolate) and tired and squee-ish at the moment and therefore the amount of Fry/Leela in this ep made me swell with shippiness and fangirlismness and hyperactivity... (I'm saying in case you hadn't picked that up already) Love the moment when Zoidberg interrupted Fry and Leela on the balcony, hated Amy when she did ><
Bit weird with the pulling each others arms off - but love the fumbly awkward hug at the end.

... I'm sorry, what plot?

My damn cable box cut out for the first five minutes and only after frantic banging and cursing came back.  I'll have to pick it up again at midnight.

Goddamn... I so thought that would happen to me... my DVR has reset itself as a new episode of "fill in the blank" literally just starts... it's happened several times.

Honestly, the last time it did that.. I ripped all of the cables out of the dvr and quickly hooked the cable to my T.V. old-school regular style.

I feel your pain... it's on CC again friday.

Anyway... bottome line... both episodes rocked.

I doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize Dan hates anyone whose negative... he takes it personally and uses vulgarity to escalate the situation and coax whichever 'Negative Nancy' on here into a "pissing race"... I'm so sick of it.

This is a Futurama fourm... if you wanna hate.. hate... but make sure it's about the show... or something at least related.

Ignore him.. and by doing so you give his posts less power... by saying "Fuck you cunt!" at the dude you are basically saying that he's right.. by giving him all the power.

It's good that some people hate... it's called duality... we need both for the other side to even exist.

It had some good things going for it, little parcels of which, on their own, were brilliant, but unfortunately some of the plot points were just too damn absurd for my particular tastes which kinda ruined the episode for me.

5/10 though perhaps in reflection I'm being a little too harsh. Though maybe not. Hmm... :shifty:

Oh, for Christ's sake. Seriously, guys, just let it go. Danny's not trolling and neither is Unmentionable--having different opinions, and expressing those opinions, does not a troll make--but you guys are both being needlessly vitriolic. Agree to disagree, why don't you? Contrary to seemingly popular belief, the world will not end if some Futurama fans like the new episodes and others don't--nor ought the malcontents lose their Futurama fanboy cards simply because they don't care for the direction the show is taking. We're all on PEEL because we at some point loved Futurama; those posters who have felt their affections for the show wane as the years have gone on deserve to be treated with the same modicum of respect as those posters who still enjoy the new episodes.

Anyway, since Danny mentioned making out with Fry: It was kind of nice to see that Fry/Leela smooch on the balcony (among other cute little hand-holds and hugs), since any kind of physical intimacy was sorely lacking from their interactions in 6B. It did my shippy heart good to see such adorable couple-y gestures.

I hated "Neutopia" but loved "Benderama" when it aired... then I got the BD and now I love "Neutopia" and now find "Benderama" boring and actually quite stupid overall.. for having such an awesome core concept of one trillion Bender's.. we kinda of got nothing new out of it.. they even elaborate on this point in the commentay.

I feel Futurama's evolved organically to keep up with the ever changing societal constructs.. it should be getting more low brow comedy wise.. whilst the strong science/math backgrounds of the writers still feed the smart story lines that in turn feed the good and honest characterization of the shows beloved PE crew...

Which is what they have always done.. we've (everyone involved in the show: fans/creators) have just had to endure some bumps in the ol' road.

Futurama is still one of the only animated shows worth watching today.

I do have two small irks with this wonderful episode.

And they are long running problems since season two.

Where was Cubert if the world was ending (Dwight was there), shouldn't Cubert be in the background of a scene?

Just give me a shot of him.. and I'm sated.. it feels silly leaving him out when the ep involves all characters.. but by this point they've done this enough now in the series that maybe it's on purpose.

It probably went down like this:

Animator: We forgot t put Cubert into another epic ep, what should we do?!

Cohen: He's the Wesley of the show anyway... screw him.

And my other small long running complaint... pick a tongue color for Zoidberg and an eye color for him... yet again, I noticed switch ups.

Yes, his eyes turned white after he blinks at least once this ep and it bugs me..and his tongue is different colors sometimes and that too bugs me.... b/c I'm crazy.

Don't get me wrong this was an epic 9/10 rated ep overall.

I also wonder what they will be doing with Mars now (what happened to it afterwards) and what happened to the Wongs as a result.

But we've got "Viva Mars Vegas" coming... so we are getting answers.

Agnew got a clone and Fry and Leela will hold hands forever.

FUTURAMA IS BACK BABY!!!!!!

WHOOO-HOOOO!!!!!

Here's to another fifty two episodes and a theatrical movie sometime after season seven is all done airing in 2013.

These two eps seemed much more CLASSIC to me.. like the writers are firing on all cylinders again.. after being in the swing of new "cable" production for a few years.

Like Futurama has settled into it's new skin... (yes, a nod to REBIRTH) and is shining as bright as Fry on Slurm LOCO?

Anyone concur?

It was nice to see that Amy is not very good at reading Martian.  But why would anyone trust her anyway? ;o)  After all she's already cheated on Kif three times and she's always been a little bit of a ditz.

Seeing Fry and Leela's arms, holding hands, and floating forever into the vastness of space is certainly corny, but as a diehard believer that Fry and Leela belong together as husband and wife with tons of red-headed one-eyed babies it was nice to see, and of course is only the first of many wonderful Fry/Leela romance plotlines that will be developing during season 7a and 7b.

All in all, I rate this an 8 out of 10.  These two episodes were a good start to the season.  I can't wait to see what is in store for the rest of the Summer!

But I do have one lingering question:  Why didn't Fry's pants burn up on reentry?  :O_o:
