I'd just love for Comedy Central to be comfortable enough with the show to greenlight more than one season at once so that they don't have to keep shutting down production and then opening it up again. It can't be good for the show from a creative stand-point.

I suppose that's part of what these broadcast/production season splits are about, but still.

Agreed.  I don't want a Devil's Hands or Overclockwise at the end of every other season or every season.  After a while it gets cheap having every Season end with a "Hey we might get cancelled so here's Fry and Leela finally getting together...just in case.  If not, we're going to shove it back into limbo but... yeah."

It's gotten to the point that if there's another "final" episode, I'd prefer it to actually be the last one. I'm tired of these ambiguous endings to be honest.

Yeah. I already feel like they've pushed it a bit far with three.

I really, really hope that when the time comes, the show gets to end properly, but at the same time, I hope they stop trying so hard to make these semi-finales that make the show's canon feel messy.
I'd be happy with something like Reincarnation as the proper finale from now on - by which I mean a great episode that's laugh-focused rather than trying to be a huge, epic love-story.

Not that I didn't like Overclockwise but like you said, there's only so many time they can pull that trick on us.

In an ideal world, they'd finish the show of their own accord after another 10+ quality seasons and would be given a theatrical film to end it all with. And the film would be incredible - arguably the greatest motion picture of all time to the point that no fan ever wants more Futurama because the film was so awesome that it should be left alone forever.

I would prefer a different type of finale for the real one. Something that isn't quite epic, but still rounds up those emotions in a form of hilarity. However, I really liked the use of Cubert in Ocw...

There's no way a theatrical film would work if it wasn't epic.

And I stand by that as the best way to end the show.

Having to deal with all these would-be finales is getting awkward, yes, but I appreciate the writers' efforts to actually try to create meaningful finales; after all, if the show didn't come back, I wouldn't want to be left feeling like they didn't try hard enough.

Not that this is really in their control, but it'd be nice if they stopped being put in positions where they don't know what the show's future will be and thus are driven to make a potential canon finale...but if that means actually deciding to end the show for good (with a movie or not) one of these times, even if there's a chance that they could keep making more episodes, then that would probably be the better decision (even if that does not seem to be the more lucrative decison to the powers that be).

We know that Fry and Leela obviously get together in the end (going off their reactions at the end of Overclockwise...), so why can't we have a finale that doesn't revolve around Fry and Leela? Something epic, like the end of ITWGY, minus the kissing.

Then a billion fan fics will spawn explaining what happens... But we'll never truly know.

I would argue that a truly epic episode is not only large in scope plot-wise (as ItWGY is)--it also has an emotional underpinning. The writers, be it out of laziness or a streak of romanticism, seem to consider Fry and Leela's relationship to be the show's real, like, heart; therefore, it seems natural to me that they would choose to focus on the shippiness in an "epic" episode.

That said, I would be fine if any future Last Episodes Ever chose not to focus on Fry and Leela's relationship specifically--but I would still expect such an episode to have some kind of emotional grounding.

Something that would physically make me cry: Fry has to permanently return to the past to save the future or something, something along those lines.

I absolutely agree. I think that the Fry/Leela thing has been done a bit too much to be their big emotional anchor now, though. They either need to find a new means of giving us something to really care about or a new spin on Fry and Leela's relationship problems. I'm sure they can still make us care for the two of them with them in a relationship. In fact, The Late Philip J. Fry already proved that they can.

Oh wow Danny, that'd actually really hit me hard. I'd love for something like that, although I think I'm alone in enjoying the more downbeat aspects of the show. Good thinking, though!

I, too, love when the writers are unafraid to take the show to a very, like, bleak emotional place. The more downbeat episodes (TKOS, for example) tend to be my favorites.

It would be really emotional. It would also have to be a really valid reason for him to go back, otherwise the whole concept of the show would have been kind of pointless.

What would be dramatic is Bender sacrificing himself to save the crew or something. It would have the potential to suck donkey balls, but if done right, it could be an extremely memorable finale.

Obviously they'd only do that if they were absolutely sure the series wouldn't be returning.

Like I said, it would definitely need to be the absolute end. Having Bender killed would spoil the show's dynamic.

But imagine if the writers had the guts to do something like that?

Nope.avi

Having everyone he knows from the 20th century coincidentally come to the 31st century is a bit of a stretch. We've already had Michelle, and I hope the writers leave it at that. The past present can stay where it is I think.

I mean like, he actually brings his parents to the future by himself. Or an enemy is threatening to kill them, so he gets them and tells them everything so they can be safe...

I actually suggested Bender dying in an awesome way such as sacrificing himself in a thread about how we wanted the show to end a while ago.

And I got chewed out for it.

Glad to see someone else thinks that'd be cool. I'd honestly love for that to happen. It'd be just like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in which
and it'd be genuinely powerful if they did it properly as well as a great means of closure for the series.

It'd also be a nice way to follow on from Lethal Inspection although I guess Ghost in the Machines has left it so that nobody would care. His software could just find a new body.

I'd love it. I honestly think that the only way they could really give the show the emotional punch I'd need to REALLY care about it in the finale is to kill one of the main three. And Fry is too obvious a choice, plus either him or Leela going messes things up for their dynamic which is still the heart of the show so I think they'd need to stay together till the bitter end.

Bender just seems like a logical choice to me. Although I suppose Fry leaving to go back to the past forever would possibly be just as emotional if they did it well.

Imagine the backlash though... it would have to be a bloody awesome final episode if they killed off someone like Bender. People would constantly cry about Futurama jumping the shark etc, etc.

I like the idea of Fry giving up the future though.

I honestly propose that we choose 4 writers, 2 supervisors, and 2 editors to write this. It should be about 2 hours like an actual theatrical movie.

Ideas:
  • The Universe is fastly shutting due to a lack of mass.
  • The Professor needs the crew to travel to the deepest ends of the universe in order to find super dangerous materials to stop the threat.
  • As part of the end, Fry and Leela would have to have a kid :D

That's my start...you guys add on! Edit anything you don't like. I'm sure we can add up all the ideas and eliminate until we have the best ones! :D

(Make sure to include bring Fry's family to the future and some really intense Bender sub-plot, maybe he gets separated from the crew like God fellas again...)

Should We Make A Topic For This?

Any ideas Turnip or Unreal?

I think that someone should be after Bender, but they take Flexo by mistake. (Just a start to lead up to Bender's final hour. I would love to have Flexo in there!)

If the show did end for good, I would love for the Brainspawn to return somehow and for the Nibblonian Prophecy to be fulfilled. I think a feature length idea could work, but it's sometimes hard to make them work completely. I also think that killing off a main character could work, if done correctly. (I just had a thought that the Professor could die for some reason, but again, it would have to be the last ever episode.)

I believe that coldy has created a graphic novel or script called: "Blame It On The Brain". I didn't read it, but it globviously has the return of the Brainspawn included inside it. And I'm sure Nibbler's in there too. I should read it sometime, seems interesting...

Also, Phil LaMarr tweeted this, it seems quite vague and random, or is it....?
