I think this is my favorite 6B episode. Reincarnation is close, but loses a few points for the relatively middling second act. The atmosphere and storytelling in this one are pretty amazing.

Hooray! Someone else who likes this ep most out of 6B! So that's you, DannyJC13, and myself who all love this ep most out of 6B. This helps restore the balance of hatred...

Anyone else who likes this ep most of out 6B, don't be afraid to say so! We are here for you!...

If characters weren't stretched out once and a while, the show would lose a little pizazz. Like in: "Bendless Love" where Farnsworth becomes all nice and stuff, in "Hell is Other Robots" Bender becomes hilariously nice, and in "Overclockwise" and "Godfellas" Bender becomes an allmighty being.

Those are not examples of existing traits being stretched out to extremes. They are examples of characters acting in opposition to their usual demeanour.

In addition, neither is absolutely necessary, but occasionally both can be used to serve a plotline. Please learn how the two differ, why neither is necessary, and why both are useful for this time next week. At that point there will be an essay question for you to answer, covering two of the three points you have been asked to go away and look up.

Hating this ep makes Otis sad

Well..I can certainly live with that ;)

But as you asked before wether there was nothing I did enjoy about that episode:
The animation was good, so that saved it from a 1/10 rating to my given 2/10.
(Of course, I will not watch an episode just for the animation, when I really despise the story. But..the animation was good when I saw it, so I'm gonna be fair).

Would you not consider watching it again in HD? Personally I can't wait to do that, if any ep will benefit from HD then this one surely is one of the main candidates. Assuming you haven't already...

I almost forgot about Cold Warriors. That was also a great episode. And Benderama, Ghost in the Machines, Fry am the Egg Man, and Tip of the Zoidberg were also particularly great ones. I think Mobius does clinch it for me, though.

Möbius Dick seems to be getting a lot of (well-deserved) love. But I think Cold Warriors is the underrated gem of 6B.

True, Cold Warriors is brilliant and now you mention it perhaps it is a little underrated. Möbius Dick is definately more underrated though; I mean it takes a lot of love just to balance out the mountains of hate. Möbius Dick is still only at 82% on CGEF, it's criminal!...

I love the 80s.

The trippiest cartoons were always the ones with the biggest anti drugs messages.

Seriously someone needs to tell those busybody ducks to mind their own fucking business.  *puffs*  Bugger off talking ducks, and bring back the rocking horse girl with the cellaphane flowers that look yellow and green and those yummy marshmellow pies.

Yes, also the LOST plane as well. Given that LOST was from after Futurama's original run, it would seem like a tall order to put in a reference which didn't suck and seem lame like most other recent pop-culture jokes in other eps. In Möbius Dick though, it worked! They found a way which wasn't lame and it didn't matter that Fry wouldn't have known about it, because he didn't directly reference it. This is how pop-culture jokes should be done...

Although it was probably a reference to Lost specifically, that show actually borrowed Oceanic Airlines from other sources (notably, the film Executive Decision, which originated it...well, not counting a 1960s "Flipper" episode apparently). It's become a standard gag to use whenever a TV or film script needs a fictional airline.

Truly an excellent episode, but it is not getting underrated. It's just not brought up a lot. :hmpf:

I must have missed something here, because I wasn't overly keen on this episode. I thought it had some good points, but overall it reminded me of "The Mutants Are Revolting", which I also thought was a 'fairly good' episode and not a brilliant one. I think the problem with both of those episodes is the fact that they were both quite predictable and some of the characters went slightly over the top in each.

Overall I enjoyed the episode (particularly the Doctor Who reference) but due to the predictable notion that the crew were still alive, which I guessed as soon as they were mentioned, and the staying alive in the body of the whale; which was a fairly obvious idea as soon as it arrived, I've only given it a 7/10  :hmpf:

I've lent the DVD to a friend but I'll rewatch the episode when I get it back to see if I enjoy it more a second time, which is possible.

It was nothing like The Mutants are Revolting to me. I get that you've derived a comparison by what you found as predictable aspects in each episode, but really the eps are nothing alike. Möbius Dick had a completely different feel, an all-out Sci-Fi vibe, the whole crew firing on all cylinders and bouncing jokes off each other like in many of the best Futurama eps...

I agree that The Mutants are Revolting was average; in fact it's quite mediocre. It doesn't really stand out that much, but it has some good moments, along with a bit of stupidity. As for the crew being alive in Möbius Dick, although not a surprise, wasn't a big a let-down. It was the amazing ride get there which made it special. As for the staying alive in the body of a whale, I wasn't really thinking about it to be honest, it was more of a well whadya know situation to me...

Let's not forget that the animation in Möbius Dick was some of the best in Futurama history, and let's not forget it!...

Just caught this again on Sunday afternoon Comedy Central.

I really really love this episode.   The emotional music, the space whale animation, Zoidberg's horror hair, Bender's line "We should be back at Planet Express hiding from work in the ceiling!"

Very re-watchable for me.

Let's not forget that the animation in Möbius Dick was some of the best in Futurama history, and let's not forget it!...

Some of the most polished, certainly. But there are some scenes from S2 and S2 done in the early 3D stuff that are much more engaging.

Not that this episode isn't good, it's only real flaw is the dodgy characterisation of Leela to serve the plot... but it's not like the animation is far above some of the other stuff that Futurama's kicked out. In fact, most of the animation for Futurama in general is superb. It's only the occasional episode that suffers from poorly-drawn frames or redundant limbs from time to time.

Futurama's one of those shows where the animation style and process combine to produce something that's very easy to make epic, amazing visuals with and very hard to mess up.

Again, I'm not knocking the episode or its' animation - just pointing out that it's not so far above par for the show as to be amazing. It's just good.

I'm not sure whether to agree with you or not. The show was good at best, although I do agree that the animation was superb. The 3D whale and whatever it blows out of its blowhole was beautiful.

The animation is even better in Season 6. I mean, look at the scene where Bender has to hold the soufflé in The Mutants are Revolting...

I agree with you TNUK.  When I NOTICE the animation is not necessarily the best animation, just something that stands out to me like the whale.

OK, Comedy Central just played Mobius Dick, Overclockwise and now Reincarnation.

Happy Sunday!

The more I watch this episode, the more I like it. It's got something great about it which I can't quite put my finger on...

I think, it may possibly be the pacing. Everything flows so nicely unlike other episodes of the Season that feel a bit rushed. The flashbacks were great, and they seamlessly interconnected with the rest of the episode.

I don't really mind Leela's behaviour to be honest. She has shown such traits in the past (although much less extreme).

I liked Amy's joke about the Chinese movie 'The Joy Luck Club'
"....when there's no joy, no luck and she's going to have to quit the club"

For those who don't get it, Lauren Tom was in that movie.

I loved this episode.   Leela has to deliver a statue only to have it ripped from her by a space whale.  Cool to see some flashbacks of when PE was in it's infancy and Zoidberg was POPULAR?!?!?!  The whole chase in space was very super cool!   Leela was dynamite, although she was a little too extreme, but that can be a good thing.  I would be too if someone snatched away something I was delivering.

Leela had Amy use a harpoon, and bossed everyone around to get that whale at all costs.  It was funny how she stabbed to stab the whale and then at the end she becomes one with the whale and Zoidberg is reunited with his girlfriend!   Loved the trippy 4th dimension.  Amy was talking backwards, Bender had a congo line, just everything about this episode was just fanastastic!
