Hey,

I saw this ep for the first time today on channel 4, how far behind am I!!  I have not seen any more futurama after this, so I'm well excited as I get to see Mother's day tomorow as well.

I thought Popplers was a well good episode, love the line from fry, when he was eating them, 'man these are like sex' only I'm gettin some'!

Classic.

I always like "double-barreled" gags--ones where the punchlines build upon each other, instead of just leading to a single payoff--and "shock" humor, so this episode was a beauty for me. The stunning scene in which Jrrr (sic) opens his eyes and Leela realizes the horrible, horrible act she has been committing with such relish--then still proceeds to lick her fingers--made me stop the VCR until I had myself under control again. "Tofu Lion," "The Fishy Joe Jingle," and "I Think There Was Something Funny In That Hippie" were other fine highlights...plus that great scene where we find out we're not the only ones who don't know the main character's full names ("Phillip?!?&quot ;).

This is my favourite episode, i loved it.
The only thing missing is a bit of Fry/Leela romance, but when the episode is this funny, it doesn't really matter.

Although I don't like this episode as much as I used to (I think I've watched it too many times!) it's still in my Top Ten. A great idea for an episode, with some hilarious lines.

Classic episode, Lrr is always great, but with Zapp as well it was amazing. Some really cool NNY scenes too, the song was hilarious, and it was full of great jokes with a cool plot :)

Source of several really good Zapp quotes.

Lrr: Where is the real Leela!?!
Zapp: I'll never tell!
*Lrr points ray-gun at Zapp*
Lrr: WHERE!?!
Zapp: I'll go get her for you!

The way Lrr calls Free Waterfall Jr. "Smelly Hippy" is too funny.  The bad drug trip from ingesting him is also great.

I also liked the fact that nobody could tell Leela and the Gorilla apart (how likely is that?) and Kif's hair dressing technique.

"The Problem With Popplers" is a very good episode. It used to rank in my top-10 (that was before I saw season 3 and 4).

It's one those shows that just makes you laugh 'til you puke the first time you watch it, and still holds up pretty nice on repeated viewing.

The pace is fast, the plot is pretty straightforward (or so you think until the twist with the Omicronians), the jokes are hillarious and the supporting characters are very strong.

I like Free Waterfall Jr. in this. He's excellent: "You can't own property, maaaan!", "I said: dooooo it!" and who can beat is argumenting tactic: "shut-up-shut-up-shut-up-shut-up-shut-up-shut-up-shut-up..."  :laff:

The Zapper and Kif are always a hit, the negotiation scene is pure genius. "Hey, these would be great with kwak-a-mole. Stop eating our young! And it's pronounced quacamolé!"

The highlight of the show however is when Lrr eats Free Waterfall Jr. That scene made me laugh so hard, I thought I would burst. "Dude, my hands are huuuuuge! They can touch anything, but themself. Oh, wait...."  :laff:

Other highlights include: The Roddenberry homage, Zoidy's penguin nest line, the tofu lion, the fingerlicking scene, "The Poppler Jingle", the second crashing of a billboard, pretty much anything involving Free Waterfall Jr. the Zapper or Lrr, finally hearing Leela's first name on the air, Fishy Joe.

Great quotes:

"Go consumate yourself!"
"Og, great! Captain Moron have a plan! Why don't you tell it to Winkus and Dinkus over here."
"They're tastier than an unguarded penguins nest."
"It's like sex, except I'm having it."
"We seem to be experiencing some technical difficulties....and crap like I've never seen before!"
"Turanga!? That's her name Phillip. Phillip!!?"
"You shouldn't eat anything that can feel pain. Ouch! Okay, we wont eat you then."

Okay, there's loads more, but I'll stop here.

Final verdict: 9/10.

Hippie: You shouldn't eat things that feel pain! (gets hit in the head with a brick) Ow!
Bender: Okay then, we won't eat you!
Leela: I'll go get some more bricks.

hehehehehaha i love that bit.

I love the deal that Bender and Fry cut with Fishey Joe so that instead of getting a dollar / dozen Popplers, now they'll be getting a dollar / dozen Popplers (great math skills on the boys, eh?).

I love the Popplers song! But the thing about C4 is that I dont think they are showing Anthology of Interest I (according to the TV guide)(and i love this ep and only seen it once), cos Mother's Day was the last one they were showing. I think they obviously put Futurama one cos of the school's easter holiday, but it is good to see episodes which were cancelled after sept 11. more Futurama please C4!!

I've just watched this again, and i've got some quotes:

Fry:" It looks like a ditch full of fried shrimp!"
Bender:" What are you blind!? It looks more like a whole full of fried Prawns!"

Fry:" Their like sex, except i'm having them!"

Fry/Bender:" Put a Poppler in your mouth when you come to Fishey Joes, what their made of is a mystery, where they come from no one knows!
You can pick em, you can lick em, you can chew em, you can stick em, if you promis not to sue us you can shove one up your nose!"

Farnsworth:" Hey! Unless this is a nude love in, get the hell off my property!"

Bender:" Popplers can't talk, Leela must be hallucinating from not eating enough Popplers!"

Bender:" Yeah, maybe it just learned to talk as a parlar trick, like Fry"
Fry:" Like Fry, like Fry!"

Farnsworth:" Enough chit chat, restrain the specimin!"

Fry:" Turanga!?"
Amy:" Thats her name Phillip"
Bender:" Phillip!?"

Gerr:" Conka {?} head, mean old conka head!"
Fishy Joe:" Sir, i'm making a point here!"

Zapp:" Hmm, 198 billion babies in a few weeks, we'll need an army of super virile men scoring round the clock! I'll do my part, Kif, clear my schedule"
Kif:" Agh" {Shakes Etch-A-Sketch ^_^ }

Kif:" Please, i'm creating!"

Zapp:" You'd sacrifice a beautiful woman to save a moderatly attractive Monkey? You must have smoked some bad Granola!"

Lerr:" The one called Smelly Hippie is right!"

Lerr:" Where is the real female?"
Zapp:" I'll never tell!"
Lerr: {Points gun at Zapp} " Where is the real female!?"
Zapp:" I'll get her for you!"

Gerr:" There are many good reasons to eat, hunger, bordom, wanting to be the worlds fattest man!"

Lerr:" Agh, i think there was something funny in that Hippie!"

Lerr:" Dude, my hands are huge! They can touch anything but them selves, oh wait..."

Loved this episode, underrated gem imo.

The surprising thing about this episode is that Zapp was actually pretty crafty.

He successfully renegotiated the Omicronians eating every human down to just eating one human which in itself is a massive win but then he follows that up with swapping Leela for an ape which would have worked if it wasn't for the hippy.

The successful negotiation probably had more to do with Lrrr filling up on nuts during the meeting than Zapp's diplomatic skills, but the ape ruse was pretty clever.

One could also argue that the method that Zapp used to defeat the killbots was crafty, but I doubt that his men would agree.

Zapp has a sort of low cunning. He's got the ability to think through a problem at the most weaselly level.

He's a little reminiscent of Arnold Rimmer.
