Gah... a guy like Matt should be above something like Family Guy, but instead he wishes he had created it instead of Seth. I read that he even shouts "I wish I had created Family Guy!" in the Simpsons Game.

Actually I'm getting the feeling that Katey feels she's a little above the Futurama cast/caste. She's a legit actress with years of experience under her belt. She did only one voice, has never contributed to the commentaries in any way and has appeared at only one Comic Con. Katey probably didn't come because she has nothing to advertise at Comic-Con other than Futurama (I didn't look closely enough to see if Sons of Anarchy has a panel so correct me if I'm wrong). All the other VA's have other shows to advertise (such as Johnny D for Batman) while she has only Futurama. It doesn't surprise me that she skipped a trip that would have only been signing a few autographs. There comes a time that a person has to realize the only reason that they have the gigs they have is because of the fans. I don't mean for every celeb to have beers with every fan, but they should let the fans know they are appreciated. Katey should really get off her high horse because it's "the handful of autographs" she'd be signing would be for the fans who are trying to make FOX pay her the amount of money she's demanding. Truth to tell, my feelings towards her as the way she seems to treat the Futurama fans is that she's a Hollywood elitist. Also, truth to tell, I wouldn't be overly upset if all the other VA's came back and Katey was replaced by Kate Mulgrew, Lauren Tom or anybody else who would view the fans as something other than a way to make a quick, easy buck and not worthy of spending a few minutes with. As much as I agree with your feelings towards Katey, I find it hard to imagine anyone replacing her voice as Leela. Though, as Wonderpants commented, she is very busy.
And I don't want Futurama to go on without one of its main characters like 8 Simple Rules. That's just creepy. "She was too busy," doesn't fly for this instance. She already had ComicCon on her agenda. She had a paid-for room in San Diego. It would have done wonders for the fan base if she had showed up for an hour or so to autograph some comics and say "Thank you," to the plebians who are fighting for her to make more money an episode than most people make in a year. Billy West is busy and he was dis-invited to the panel discussion. He found a way to be there and sign autographs. The same for any other cast member who kept their word and made an appearance. Actually with this soap opera of making Futurama 2.0 on the cheap, screwing the writers, screwing the VA's, I'm really beginning to wish the thing stayed dead at "Devil's Hands". They screwed the pooch with the lackluster DVD's and the first episode hasn't even been started yet and it's being to appear as if that's going to be fucked over also. Yet FOX allows Seth to make a Family Guy epsodes about abortion that they won't even air but can't come off the bucks to make Futurama 2.0 the right way.

I'm expecting this to be the next in Futurama news:
"To further alienate the hardcore fans, the names of the main characters will be changed to Leila, Frye, Amie, Flexer, Barnsworth, Jupiter and Iceburg.
They will be voiced by the crack stellar cast from the 1960's anime cartoon, Speed Racer.
Leila, a mutant with one boob is the leader of this cast of n'er do wells. Frye, a alcoholic who often drinks himself into comas is best friends with Flexer, a meth-addicted robot who uses people to score his next hit. Amie is the haughty permicuous lesbian who has eyes for Leila and her massive boob...."
Well, everybody gets the idea...

Yeah, I also get the vibe that Katey Sagal is kind of indifferent towards the fans, but I do think she genuinely respects the writers and appreciates the show. Ultimately, that's what's important to me. I'd probably feel a bit differently if I went to Comic-Con hoping to see her or get her autograph or something, but sitting at my laptop about 3,000 miles away, I don't particularly care if she's congenial. What matters to me is the work she does on the show; I can't imagine anyone else as Leela. (In Sagal's defense, I've never gotten the sense that she "phones it in" or whatever when it comes to her work on Futurama...unlike, say, those huge stars who lend their voices to animated films in exchange for a huge pay-off. She takes the work seriously enough, and she does an excellent job as Leela.)

Ugh...really, really late. I've been really busy the last 2 days, had no real sleep, etc etc and never really had time to post.
I know everything that's been said about the Futurama panel's been said, but yeah, it was very, very underwhelming and I was disappointed. I kept thinking that them saying the cast wouldn't be there, them saying not to mention "you know what" would lead to the VAs having a surprise intro later in the panel to rally up the crowd, but it never came and I was kinda pissed that I sat through 3 panels (I'm a fan of Chuck, that was a GREAT panel, but I had to sit through *ugh* the FG and Cleveland Show panels) for this very anticlimactic panel. I was pissed enough that the cast wasn't there, but was even more pissed that they wouldn't even let us talk about the cast dispute and we had to beat around the bush the whole time with some BS questions along the way. I really felt sorry for DXC and MG, they seemed pretty bummed through the panel and tried to salvage the panel with some staff transcripts and prizes. Also, when DXC gave his own little speech about "you know what" at the end, he seemed pretty depressed, in effect, depressing me.
The upcoming plots seem pretty interesting, especially the Bender/Amy/Prop Infinity one and Zapp/Leela stranded. I'm only scared about how they'll handle the whole story, especially the satire on the Bender/Amy thing. It's really one of those things that would be pretty great if handled well or crash and burn if done badly. Also, where would Kif fit into this plot? However, there's no way I'm gonna watch if THE ORIGINAL CAST ISN'T BROUGHT BACK. I sent my hate mail already and I'm waiting, Fox.
It was nice to see the Futurama cast there for autographs...however I couldn't get in line...I didn't have time because I had a few more things to catch at the exhibit hall and I had a panel to get to, and Saturday was my last day. I really got to go all 4 days next time...
And here's my 2 cents about Katey Sagal, I really think her schedule rather than her indifference towards the fans was the real reason she wasn't with the rest of the cast. I got her autograph at least year's SDCC and she was a pretty sweet person and I was able to get into a pretty good, natural, unforced conversation with her. I don't know if I got special treatment, but she seemed pretty appreciative towards me.
And as for the whole con in itself, save for the depressing Futurama stuff, it was fantastic. Even though I got little real sleep and was out til midnight or later every night, the atmosphere was great enough to keep me going and I'm coming back next year where hopefully we'll have a nice, happy, entertaining Futurama panel with the cast back in place. *fingers crossed*

Actually, they're stealing ideas from themselves, seeing as how the likes of Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, and Sarah Michelle Gellar have already played Bart's various girlfriends.
And besides, it's not like Futurama and The Simpsons haven't shared guest stars in the past. Stephen Hawking comes to mind.

Ironically, I'm watching Meryl Streep on Conan as I read that.
Speaking of which, I'm very interested in finding out who these mystery guest stars they mentioned at the panel are. Hopefully they're actually interesting and not lame "it girls".

@i_c_:That's not ironic, that's coincidental! On the Guest Stars: I just hope the guest stars either make sense within the context of the episode (Star Trek cast members, Stephen Hawking, and Al Gore are good examples of this) or play new characters (Robot Santa, Planet Express Ship- Female Personality, The Waterfalls). I don't like it when the guest star isn't important within the context of the episode and is just there for either an ego-baiting role or so David X could say he worked with some celebrity he admired (Pamela Anderson, Lucy Lui, and Pauly Shore are all examples of this). My post on Guest Star use: http://www.peelified.com/index.php?topic=16354.msg1027852#msg1027852A response post from Tedward, which I agree with: http://www.peelified.com/index.php?topic=16354.msg1028375#msg1028375

I don't get it. Why would anyone spend $200 on the complete series when you can buy each season/movie seperately and only spend about $160? Is that Bender head really worth an extra $40?
Possible. Some might think so. The hard limited notes from DXC and MG were certainly worth the extra cost, especially if you were going to Comic-Con anyway.

You can get each season of Futurama at Wal-mart for 14.95 and the 4 direct-to-DVD for $19.95 each - to get all would be $120.00 plus sales tax.

I think Svip and sO are the same person...
As for those pseudo-auditions: The thing is, they're not horrible. I mean, they sound little like the original characters, and they fail to amuse or compel, but they'd constitute passable acting on most other animated shows. And, honestly, they're decent facsimiles. (In fact, it kind of scares me, thinking of a Fox executive listening to audition tapes, nodding his head and going, "You know, this just might work." I mean, I want the original VAs back, and I still thought that guy did an okay job.)
But, y'know, new actors would never actually work in practice. Because the thing is, Futurama would cease to exist without the spirit behind the voices, the enthusiasm and the respect and the love that the actors themselves have for the material.
'Course, I'm preaching to the choir here.

All those auditions sounded the same. Kif was the only one that sounded anything like the original voice. Just goes to show how hard to replace these VA's are.

At the very least, it drives home how organic and not generic the current voices are. That guy's basically tweaking his normal voice--much like Billy West does for Fry--and yet he's obviously not capable of the range of any of the real actors. Which really shows you how difficult it would be to re-cast the show with sound-alikes (or, y'know, wannabe sound-alikes)--the cast would probably triple in size.
