I read it, if it makes you feel any better. Your transition explanations certainly went above and beyond the typical responses. However, while people may debate what constitutes a supporting or peripheral character, I don't think Bender is anything other than a "main" character...

I could get on-board with the notion that Fry is the star of the show, while every other character provides varying degrees of support. Like a pyramid structure, with Fry at the very top, Leela and Bender one level down, then the rest of the PE crew on the bottom. But that's only if I'm really stretching it and/or playing devil's advocate.

Well, I see Bender as a supporting character.  He supports the lead.  If you really want me to retract my statement, how deep do I have to go for supporting?  Hermes? Robot Devil? Billionaire Bot? Hank Aaron XXIV? Mr. Panucci?

I'm pickin' him.  Favorite supporting character:  Mr. Panucci.  No, Seymour.  No, Bender when he turned human in the one episode.

It's up to you how deep to go for supporting; some see only the Big Three as main and the rest of the crew, even the Professor, as supporting, while some see the crew as main and then branch out. Are Zapp and Kif supporting or peripheral? And should people be looking at the series as a whole (since in a specific episode, say "A Head in the Polls," Nixon is certainly supporting if not a "main" character within the plot, while overall I'd say he's more peripheral...or is he? He's a recurring character with decent-sized roles, so is that enough to make him supporting?)? I seem to recall Svip making some sort of clarification list about this issue before, but even then it's still rather subjective. But I'm not trying to attack you here; it's just that, as Svip said, if Fry is the one and only lead (unless you think Leela is too but not Bender), then that category does lose its meaning.
