I heard back when that Futurama's ratings and Family Guy's too, ratings were dropping in the year 2000 because people were more interested in shows like "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and "Survivor".  Keep in mind this was like 5 years ago.

Looking back, did anyone believe that was probably true?  As when both shows ratings began to plummet?

I'd say that it was true for Futurama, but not for Family Guy. Fox just didn't want Family Guy on the air. Futurama is sort of growing into fame.

I've been noticing that, too and I would have to agree and say that it didn't really apply for FG as much, not to say that Futurama didn't have it's share of fans back then, but there's also the certain hatred that Fox had against Futurama, too.

I also have to say that I'm beginning to notice what parasite said about how it's been growing into it's fame. I've introduced Futurama to about 10 people total last year, and each and every one of them loved it. It's clear that awareness takes time, and I'm glad that it's getting the positive it deserves.

Me too, Bandit.  Every person i've introduced Futurama to has loved it and become a fan.

That might be a valid idea, if "Millionaire" and "Survivor" were ever on at the same time as Futurama.

Thankfully the popularity of reality shows, along with boy bands, has dropped significantly since then. I think if they put Futurama on the air right now, it would be a breath of fresh air compared to the laugh-track sitcom crap FOX tries out each season (Quintuplets, Hot Dog On a Stick anyone?) The problem is that adding the show in addition to the cartoon shows they have on now might "overdo" it for the average viewer. Hence, away with extra Simpsons reruns and American Dad! Give Futurama its own night! huzzah! as long as it's a good night...

and I don't know about you, but I'd take Futurama over Family Guy any day

Reading your pose, I can't help but be reminded of the beginning of When Aliens Attack. "Due to technical difficulties, we now bring you eight animated shows in a row."

I happened to hear that the second season of American Dad (or AD, if you will) is starting on September 11th, now if Fox was going to put down any show, that would seem a reasonable time  :hmpf:. I really hate AD, along with Family Guy and I've heard mixed rumors about AD, but is it or is it not true that ratings haven't been on it's side lately?(Does that even make sense? I can't tell anymore.)

Not to throw anyone off-topic of course, but it's something somewhat valid to the topic still.   :)

When my friend introduced me to Futurama i thought it was awesome, i still do! I've seen Family Guy before... it's okay, but it's nowhere near as good as Futurama, this probably isnt to do with the topic much, but i like to speak my thoughts as most of us do  :)

The simpsons cost's alot of money to produce. More so every year it continues. I think fox, sensing its popularity to rise, cut the legs out from under it before it got to big.

Yeah. I'm constantly saying quotes from the show, so hopefully people in my school will hear me and ask W.T.H. it came from and I can gleefully say "Futurama" I think the reason it's rising to fame is because everyone can relate to one or more characters and FG just has a blah, not so different personality type family

Edit: Sorry about the off-topic, but they released the newest Simpsons season to DVD not too long ago; the box is Homer's head. They almost have to do another season since they only did part one of "Who Shot Mr.Burns" Stupid FOX... scr** them

"Who Shot Mr. Burns Part 2" is part of Season 7.

Also, on topic, Futurama came on at about the same time as reality's beginnings and Millionaire, so Futurama's reatings could've been made worse by the two. Also, the whole "7:00pm time slot" thing could've helped as well.

I think Adult Swim saved Futurama and Futurama made Adult Swim.

Yup. Wouldn't watch it any other way... I mean, lets face it. Their commercials aren't exactly kid friendly if ya know what I mean...anyways, It used to be on noticeably at the best time slot after the Simpsons: 5:30 central time. MITM is a crappy show, and in my opinion, Futurama could kick it's butt in ratings (and it did right?  ;))

Hmm? Oh I'm just sayin' it's an eternity better than any reality or live actor show ever will be. Hopefully, the ratings will go up though. 'Specially if AS puts in on 6 days a week or at least five.

I think it was more so that Adult Swim saved Futurama and Family Guy,  hangs on to reruns for a rediculously long time, viewers start complaining, Family Guy rises from the dead, and then Adult Swim starts referring to it as their baby.

Even though Family Guy, Futurama and Aqua Teen Hunger Force is basically why Adult Swim is still alive, I believe their love is biased.

But that's just how I see this.

true, the ratings for Futurama are through the roof at adult swim. and they always advertise the DVD's for those three shows.

If adult swim is "biased", it's because Family Guy is making new episodes while Futurama isn't.  I'm sure they would like to have Futurama back just as much, but they're definitely going to be more enthusiastic about a show that's still giving them new material to run then a show that's only repeats for them.

The funny thing, though, is that Futurama was definitely more popular at first.  Despite what people say, Fox really tried with Family Guy.  They gave it a lot of support at the beginning, and while they may have faltered in one area or the other, it really genuinely failed them. It even took the post-Simpsons slot Futurama should have had for a while, and ultimately the ratings couldn't be sustained.  Fox put more support behind Family Guy, and yet, there's a distinct reason why Futurama was renewed for the 2000-2001 season and Family Guy wasn't.

But, times have changed, and Family Guy's dvds sold better....hopefully more people will discover Futurama over the years.  Despite the current FG fad, I have the feeling Futurama is going to be more lasting.

^exactly, a lot of people only know Family Guy because of the hype, or theydont understand how smart the writing in Fututrama is, not that Family Guy sucks. I love it. But Futurama has way more qualities.

(sorry, this probably caused a huge bump)

I would really love to believe that, but after all the effort I've gone through... I fear I've begun to give up. I mean, a network can only support reruns for so long, but after a while they are going to feel it's a waste. But, well... I don't know anymore.    I never understood how fads work anyway... I have no idea why people like Family Guy so much, I hate it myself.

It's simple, usually mindless comedy.  Many successful shows follow that format, and as the Aliens Attacks episode states, audiences fear the unfamiliar.  Futurama, with its smart writing, is unfamiliar in that sense.
