when red dwarf first aired its ratings were very low, yet loads of people claim to have been their from the begining. the same will probably be true of futurama

I am unashamed to admit that I never watched Futurama but for about 20 minutes until it was in syndication.  Hey, I was very involved with my church 1999-2004.  Also, I thought it had been cancelled after the first season or so.  I mean, it was never on.

O_< *twitches* Now that's just wrong.

Anytosh, as to when I first started watching Futurama? It was probably around mid-2003, or whenever they started airing it on [adult awim]. I was able to catch a few episodes (and I really mean A FEW, as in only 3 or 4), but I didn't really get into it until I stumbled across Space Station Futurama in a computer class. And the rest is history. One of those defining moments when you think: "Holy sh**, this show's really good! I can already tell I'm gonna love it." Unfortunately, due to Fox's poor scheduling, I was a bit too late to boost its initial ratings. (Though I don't know how big of a difference one extra TV set would make...) And I also distinctly remember reading an article in Nickelodeon magazine about Futurama when it was about to come out. Though, in hindsight, I think the show's a might too mature to have been advertized about in a kid's magazine... -_-;;

:eek: Commie Detector, get your mind outta the gutter mon! Bringing up a very disturbing thing, you reminded me
of, I was at school and they had these people that did a drug show thing (like a drug trip and telling people it's obviously bad)and I swear they sang "Life is in the crotch" my friend also heard that.. Either they really did, or we both mis-heard, but many people heard weird things and I think they were faking singing. Anyways...
@ T-Veronica: I didn't get that issue of Nick mag, I got the choice awards for '99 so close.. If I'd only signed up earlier...

Yeah, it sounds like you just barely missed it. You would know if you had it, I believe it was the cover story. I wish I had kept my copy, but like I said, it was a bit too mature for me back then. (I was only 9 when Futurama first came out. Now I'm almost 16. How screwed up is that?) Kinda makes me feel old now... >_>;;

hey guys, do you think we could split this into 2 threads? one for speculation and conversation and one purely for movie news updates, I only ask because i check up on the site during my lunch hour and dont really want to spend my valuable eating and starring into space time reading conversations. Maybe A new thread will be started when we actually get some news, which hasn't actually happened for a while.

Anywho, just a suggestion;

The way Futurama fans are so uncertain and unsure of these movies, it makes me wonder if those movies are ever going to be greenlighted.  BTW, I've been watching Futurama since it first came out.

Hey kiddo, I turn 44 this week, so be quiet about feeling old...

Anyway, being an original Trekkie, all I can say is 'Don't give up hope'.  Star Trek died in 1969, it was bought back as The Motion Picture in 1980, then it bloosomed into Paramounts most profitable francise.  Will this happen with Futurama?  Oh my, no (Best Prof. Farnsworth immitation), but FOX does understand profits; Cartoon Network has promoted Futurama and look at it now - it's much more popular than it was during its initial run - the DVD's have sold well, Billy West seems very optimistic about the straght to DVD movies (and I promise you that if the movies get made, FOX will air them).

Have faith and keep banging the drums, pots, pans, tin cans, whatever so that FOX knows that there is interest (and profit) in Futurama!

Same here - I never watched Futurama until May 2005; I caught 'The Sting' and 'WNFHGB' on Cartoon Network - after just 2 eps I went to Wal-Mart at 2 AM and bought all 4 DVD sets.  Greanted, I have a weird work schedule, but if I had known about this great series, I would have set the VCR to record and watched later.  Alas, even this wouldn't have worked, as I have been reading that Futurama was pre-empted, moved without notice and sometimes went weeks between eps.  This sounds like some pissed-off FOX director deliberately screwing with the ratings to kill the show.

ABC did the same thing to Drew Carey during its last 2 seasons - it's just amazing how we can sit back and see how things happened and realize - 'Hey, somebody hated the show and killed it'.

I have to admit, I'm a bit (too much) a Leela fan.  She's the only one with a lot of character, and she has more hangups than a psych ward.  A pty that the show didn't last a couple of more seasons so that we could see if she ever got a grip on her life...

(Oops, sorry about the back-to-back posting; I ask forgiveness)

Anyway, I saw that issue of Nick Mag too. I used to get every issue since at least 1996, but stopped getting them around December last year when it got too "gay-ified", you know, the whole revamp of Nick and Disney thing with bad crap. I'm almost 14 now...makes me feel old too.

I miss the Drew Carrey Show. And Whose Line. ABC ruined my prime-time schedule!

Well, we have no news to report, and one discussion just sorta leads to another. The same thing happened in the Anchovies for Fry thread. It happens. *shrugs* But as long as it's Futurama-related (and relatively on-topic) then it's probably not a big deal. As long as you don't upset the moderators. Nobody on the net has a more underappreciated job than they do. (In my experience, anyway.) *huggles mods*

P.S. Keep in mind that posting to say that people are off-topic is off-topic in itself, eh?  ;)

Ever hear of that saying "no news is good news?" Well maybe there has been no official announcement either way because it is still being discussed. I am just glad that Fox has talked about it which shows that they at least remember what Futurama was...which is surprising since they didn't know what it was when it originally aired.

P.S. I also never saw Futurama until mid 2003 from my friends at college and AS.

This is slightly old news, but according to TV Guide, at the San Diego Comicon, Matt Groening confirmed the Futurama DTVs.

I think of it like this:  even if the Futurama DVDs never come out nor get greenlighted at least there's always the comic books.  If Matt Greoning really did confirm the DVDs, then that's proof enough for me.  All we need to do is wait....

Comic Books just arent the same as movies/shows.

arent as funny, but that is just me.

it would be a travesty if they pay for the comix, but not for the movies.

Er, yeah. I really don't think that the comic books are a suitable replacement, either. They seem to be all humor, with none of the awesome...epic-ness that made the show what is was. And they're rather lacking in the emotional area. (For a shipper, anyway.) >_> They also appear to be geared entirely to Futurama's male fans, even going so far as to state it directly. (In #20, I believe.) But, I mean, c'mon, there ARE female fans out there. We DO exist. *sigh* It's tough being in the minority...

But I don't want to post to criticize the comics. I mean, I always go out and buy them as soon as I can, so it's not like I...y'know, hate them or anything. Oh my, no. But so far, from what we've heard, the movie possibilities are looking promising, so hopefully we can all find closure that way. (Jeez, that sounds so depressing, doesn't it? I need to learn to re-word things better.)

Im proud to say i watched Futurama from the very begining (it's UK begining anyway). I remember the first time i saw Bender. Matt Greoning was on The Big Breakfast with Chris Evans (hey remember that! what a great show it was at the time) He drew the characters live in the studio and explained that the reason for his characters only having 4 fingers was down to "pencil mileage" which i thought was pretty funny.
I remember i even taped the little 5 minute promo that channel 4 aired before the pilot. Ah, those were the days, when the show was on like clockwork everty week. Then somewhere around the middle of series 2 something happened and i had to work really hard to find out when the show was on  :(

Nowadays I have my vast collection of merchandise all safely tucked away (see my "How Much Ya Got" thread in the stockroom), sure i hardly ever post on peel anymore, i can no longer recite the full list of episodes in order, and i go for weeks/months without seeing Futurama. But i love it when i meet people at uni who are into the show. It seems that the people who like Futurama REALLY like it, and the other people just havent heard of it yet.

The UK comics have gone shitty and the proper US ones come out once in a blue moon but i look forward to the DVD movies. It seems that the rumour is slowly becoming fact. MANY uk film/dvd magazines have mentioned the project in little side articles and there's this "feeling" i've got that it really is going to happen. So, good luck Futurama i look forward to your return so that i can once more put my life on hold and bask in your glory.

I feel really left out for three reasons:
1. I haven't posted in this thread yet
2. I was probably only 5 years old when Futurama aired, and
3. I live in Australia so I am worried about the fact that the Futurama movies might not come out over here. But there are the comics and the DVD sets, I have all 4. I have been hearing a lot about "unseen" episodes over here, and to any American fan, is there any new episodes after The Devils Hands Are Idle Playthings?

2007 is sheer speculation on the part of the IMDB community.  Honestly, I'm surprised they put up a page with as little information as they have, and the fact that someone (I'm too lazy to look back a page and find out who) managed to slip in a fake plot summary makes me rather leary of IMDB's rumor control.

That said, all the circumstantial evidence is in our favor now.

EDIT: It was Smitty, whom I believe also made a horrible fake plot for the Simpsons movie.

I'm not buying it yet but I hope it someday happens. If Futurama got renewed people would kill one another in celebration on this board but we'd have to wait a horrible year before it would get on the air and we'd die in anticipation. Especially those rumours of FG coming back in 2003.

More hopefulness: if Serenity does well, it's entirely possible that it will tip the balance further in favor of a greenlight.  Serenity, as you probably know, is a movie based on another underrated Fox sci-fi show called Firefly.  They let the rights go to Universal for the movie, but if they see more evidence of profitability in this sort of movie...but then again, I'm sure someone has pointed out Star Trek to them already, and if that's not an after-market success story, I don't know what is.

Wow. I totally didn't know that. O_o But then again, I've never had the chance to watch Firefly, either. At DragonCon 2004, I accidentally ended up in the Firefly room when trying to find the [adult swim] room. Meheh. Slightly embarrassing, but...y'know, life goes on. >_>
