In Norway we only use subtitles. Sometimes the captions are translated, but not always. I think they shouldn't be translated, the jokes doesn't work as good in Norwegian.

Being an Americacentric yankee, I don't watch Futurama in any language except the original English.

Now in December 2001 Futurama will be premiered in Russia. (I think they'll show first two seasons). While I'm russian and russian is my native language, after I got to watch 2 seasons of Futurama in original english I know that alot of cool jokes (mostly word-based) can be lost in the translation, and nothing can be done.

Welcome to PEEL Gila Monster.

The problem with dubbing (and subtitles) is that a lot of jokes is puns or related to more or less unique american phenomenons, and thus is nigh impossible to succesfully translate.

Thanks, it's a great forum here.

Oh, and also I think I saw Futurama on the POLSAT TV (not sure, on one of the Poland channels) - they translate all movies/series really good and they have only one person (a man voice) who speaks all the dialogues. That's better than dubbing... in some cases.

The only jokes that should get lost in the translations should be puns. On a side note, my TV gets POLSAT on a broadcast channel, but I don't think I get Futurama.

Maybe I've seen it on "2" (Poland channel), maybe on other... I don't remember. Maybe it was German VIVA2 (which I REALLY doubt)... whatever.

I don't think it was VIVA2, thats a music channel. In Germany Futurama is aired by Pro7.
